4-H SHOOTING SPORTS GRANTS AWARDED TO COUNTY PROGRAMS

Grant funds have been awarded to eight counties for starting or strengthening 4-H Shooting Sports programs. Those counties chosen by the selection committee to receive funds are Blount, Crockett, Decatur, Giles, Hamilton, Loudon, Obion, and Shelby.  Those counties will be notified separately of the exact amount of the award.

A total of 21 counties submitted applications, eight of which were first-time applicants. This is the most ever received for this particular grant program.

The grant monies will be used for the purchase of materials, equipment and recognition for participants and/or training for leaders. Those receiving grants are encouraged to pursue matching funds from community resources to strengthen the potential for future funding.

The National Wild Turkey Federation is the donor for these grants funds. Counties should thank their local chapters for their sponsorship. Congratulations to those awarded grant funds, and thanks to all who applied.

4-H’ERS RETURN FROM LAS VEGAS

Rebecca Collins from Lincoln County and Hannah Wolters from Maury County recently returned from national competition in the Make It With Wool Contest held at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Make It With Wool celebrated its 60th birthday this year. Both girls had previously won the state contest held in September at the 2007 Lincoln County Fair in Fayetteville. They were accompanied by Wendy Collins, Tennessee Make It With Wool state director, and Dee Wolters, Hannah’s mother.

Rebecca, the senior division ambassador for Tennessee, made a chocolate 100% wool sateen tailored dress and jacket. She also made a pink 100% flannel hat trimmed with chocolate piping. All of her pieces were fully lined. She fashioned her outfit from Vogue patterns.

Hannah, the junior division ambassador for Tennessee, made a black tweed 100% wool suit. Using a McCall's pattern, Hannah made a lined jacket and straight mid-knee length skirt.

On Thursday evening, the girls were welcomed by Marie Lehfeldt, the national coordinator for Make It With Wool. They enjoyed playing games with the 58 contestants.

Friday morning, Rebecca and Hannah were in competition early. After appearing before the panel of judges for only two minutes, they were rushed for a morning fashion parade in front of the American Sheep Industry Women. Later that afternoon, Rebecca and Hannah's garments were judged on construction. On Friday evening these two girls spent four hours in rehearsal for the final fashion show.

While in Las Vegas, Rebecca and Hannah also enjoyed a "Jubilee!" backstage tour at Bally Hotel. One of the famous Jubilee Dancers escorted the girls back stage to the scenery and costume areas where all the Bob Mackie and Pete Menafee costumes are kept. The tour culminated with a make up demonstration and costume change which transformed the guide into a world famous Jubilee showgirl. After Rebecca and Hannah had their picture made with the showgirl, it was back to the Riviera for the final dress rehearsal. During free time, Hannah attended some of the seminars hosted by the American Sheep Industry, and Rebecca did a little bit of site seeing.

The closing banquet for the American Sheep Industry convention was held on Saturday night. Celebrating its 60th birthday, a period fashion show was presented with wool garments being modeled from each of the decades. Hannah Wolters volunteered to model a plaid wool pants outfit representing the 70's. The parade of participants for the 60th Make It With Wool was set to the music from Deal or No Deal. Rebecca and Hannah carried suitcases with 60 on one side and Tennessee on the other side. Both girls did an excellent job modeling and represented our great state well.

The state contest for 2008 has already been set for September 13 at the Lincoln County Fair in Fayetteville. For additional information, please feel free to email Wendy Collins at collins_wendy@bellsouth.net.

ARE YOUR CONGRESS DELEGATES ELIGIBLE TO RUN FOR OFFICE?

Tennessee 4-H Congress is fast approaching. Many of you are getting ready for your regional Congress readiness days. Your 4-H’ers may be thinking about running for an office. Here are some things they need to keep in mind.

1. All candidates must be official Congress delegates (attending as either a senator or representative). Only senators may run for Speaker of the Senate; only representatives may run for Speaker of the House. Any delegate (Senator or Representative) is eligible to run for Governor.
2. A member of the current state 4-H council cannot run for a Congress office and cannot resign his/her current council position in order to be eligible to run for a Congress office.
3. All candidates must be approved by the state 4-H office for membership in the Tennessee 4-H Honor Club by March 27, 2008. (To check and see if your delegates are Honor Club members go to 4h.tennessee.edu/foragents/ and click on the Honor Club membership banner.)
4. A candidate must be enrolled in the 9th or 10th grade on January 1 of the current year.

For more details on election procedures, visit the Tennessee 4-H Congress Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/stcong/election/elerules.htm.

BILLS AND RESOLUTIONS READY FOR STATE 4-H CONGRESS

The bills and resolutions to be used in the Know Your Government program at State
4-H Congress have been posted to the Web site. They can be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/stcong/nourgov/. The Know Your Government program is always one of the highlights of State 4-H Congress. Delegates will have the opportunity to state their views and try to influence their peers as they sit in the House and Senate chambers and actually vote on the bills and resolution.

Check out the links to the left of each bill. These are resources to help delegates prepare for this mock legislative session. There is also a link allowing you to print the bills from the Web site. Special thanks go to the Eastern Region and Western Region program leaders for their efforts in developing the bills and resolution.

COUNTY DAIRY PROMOTION CONTEST

Vote Dairy graphicIf you have not already received it, you should be receiving within the next few days information from J.J. Collins and Eric McClain on the 2008 County Dairy Promotion Contest. This event provides opportunities for 4-H members to build communication skills, citizenship and leadership skills, as well as skills in consumer science, health and fitness, dairy foods, and food and nutrition. If you wish to utilize this opportunity in your 4-H program, be sure to send your information sheet with the member’s name and the request for materials along with the return request card for the June Dairy Month kit by April 15. Remember: $200 will be added to the local county 4-H funds of the three overall state winners in each division. If you do not receive the information about the event, please let me know. The information can also be found on our Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/dairypromo/.

We are also looking for 5-6 teen leaders who are not serving as June Dairy Month chairpersons to serve in leadership roles for the chairperson training sessions at the June Dairy Month Kick Off luncheon on May 30, 2008. We would especially like to have teens who have been winners in the promotion event in the past or who are active in dairy or dairy foods activities. If you would like to nominate someone, please send me a note with the name, address and brief statement about why you think they would be good in this leadership role.

GET READY FOR ELECTRIC CAMP!

Electric Camp graphicThe 2008 4-H Electric Camp is scheduled for June 24-27. The camp is for 6th and 7th grade 4-H members as of January 1, 2008. Electric Camp is designed for 4-H’ers who have NOT previously attended. There is no return participation. Members do not have to be enrolled in the electric project to attend the camp.

Electric Camp is a fun-filled, rewarding adventure in electricity held at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The camp will feature learning centers staffed by electric utility professionals. Each learning center will use hands-on activities that allow the 4-H members to learn by doing. Previous electric camps have received rave reviews from the 4-H members, leaders and Extension staff that have attended.

The cost for the 2008 4-H Electric Camp will be $140. This fee includes the cost of meals, lodging, field trips, insurance, programs, etc. Transportation fees are covered by members of the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association.

Each region is eligible to send two adult volunteer leaders to the camp. Leaders should have an interest in the electric project. At least 12 camp assistants will also be selected to attend Electric Camp in a leadership capacity. Camp assistants must be senior 4-H members.

You will receive registration material from your regional office in the near future. Additional information is available on the Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/elecamp/.

LOUISIANA PARISH LOOKING TO EXCHANGE IN 2008

Iberville Parish located in South Louisiana on the banks of the Mississippi River and just a stone’s throw to our state capital Baton Rouge and the Crescent City of New Orleans is actively seeking a county who would like to participate in a teen exchange this summer. I realize that this might be short notice for many of you, however, I just recently introduced the idea of the state exchange program with my junior leaders here and they were excited about the possibilities. My group consists of approximately 15-20 teen leaders along with several volunteers who would love the idea of traveling to your state this year and hosting in the summer of 2009.

Here are a couple of links to our parish and state tourism departments for you to get an idea of what all could be in store for you and your 4-H members when they travel down South to the great state of Louisiana!

SUPER Q & A: Part # 3

Here are some more questions which have surfaced as data was viewed for the annual enrollment report.

Q. I noticed few activities on our county's Annual 4-H Youth Enrollment Report. How do use SUPER Enrollment to attach activities to a members file?
A. To enter an activity for a member, search their name. Click on the name. Select "Activities" tab, click "add" now select the activity, the year and the level and "save."

Q. Can I enter more than one activity at a time for a 4-H club member?
A. SUPER has no function that will allow you to enter more than one activity at a time. Part of this has to due with selecting the level of the activity. However, once you are on the member's activity tab, click add any number of times to add additional activities.

Q. Is there any way I can assign an activity to all or some of the members that appear listed in a club? For example, every 4-H member in Mrs. Smiths 5th grade club gave a speech, can I somehow assign this activity to all members at one time?
A. No, activities must be entered for individual members.

Q. In Blue Ribbon, we would "roll over" the data in early October, making our 4-H year start then instead of in January. With the new reporting system, are we going on a calendar year or "club year," like October 2007 through September 2008 for example? Since the report will be due in August from now on, would we start the "new year" after the report?
A.

Due to the transition between two different databases a 2007 Annual Enrollment Report was requested in January to capture a picture of the county enrollment. Future annual enrollment reports will be due August 1. Basically we will be utilizing a club year and it will be from August through July.

Since the database is housed within the Internet, I have immediate access to data entered and to reports submitted. A few days after the due date, I will lock the report for the past year.

In SUPER, the rollover will occur on a statewide basis for all enrollees, not just for 4-H. It will occur automatically. The rollover will take place approximately August 15.

Q. Our report has been locked. We are not finished (entering data), is there anyway it can be unlocked? None of our data entered yesterday (Thursday, 1/31) is in the report. Please advise.
A. The annual enrollment report was due January 25. Reports were locked January 30 and 31.As we work with SUPER, it is evident that offices will need to re-evaluate how data is managed. If programming data is entered consistently and correctly reporting will be quick and easy

Q. We cannot get our volunteers to show up in the 2007 report, even though I have entered them. Is there a reason for this?
A.

Once the individual personal contact information is entered for an adult enrollee, select the "Volunteerism" tab on the left hand side menu, click edit and complete data entry by selecting the appropriate answers. Until this last step is complete, the enrollee is not identified as an Extension volunteer.

In SUPER Enrollment, use the lists feature to create a list of volunteers. If only a few or none of your volunteers are listed, you likely have adults enrolled but not identified as a volunteer.

Q. I was working on my 4-H enrollment and found that it only shows about 370 4-H members and 2 volunteers enrolled for 2007. We uploaded members from Blue ribbon and there were about 1400. The 300+ may be the 4th graders we have entered for this year. So what am I doing wrong?
A. The members uploaded from Blue ribbon needed to be assigned to a 4-H club or group to be an official member in SUPER. Remember, only name, address, gender, grade, race/ethnicity and birth date were uploaded, all other information was not. Check and see if those members were assigned to a 4-H club or group in SUPER.

Q. I am getting different numbers with participation and demographics. What do I have to check to make them match?
A. Participation does not have to equal demographics. Participation does not eliminate duplicates. Demographics does eliminate duplicates (it's a head count). One child can be in multiple after-school clubs, in-school clubs, community clubs, school enrichment programs, etc.
