KIWANIS OFFERS LEADERSHIP TRAINING OPPORTUNITY FOR TENNESSEE 4-H’ERS

Tennessee 4-H members in grades 8-12 have a life-changing opportunity before them…. the international Key Leader leadership training event. The event is scheduled for March 28-30, 2008 at Camp Wesley Woods in Townsend, Tennessee.

What's in store?
Leadership training, team building (low ropes course), tons of fun and loads of new friends to meet!

But this conflicts with Congress…
Yes… the dates for the spring leadership training are the same as those for State 4-H Congress. Those 4-H'ers in grades 8-12 who are NOT attending Congress may want to consider Key Leader as another leadership training event. For those attending Congress, another Key Leader leadership training event will take place in the fall. However, the fall event is for 9-12th graders only.

What is Key Leader?
Key Leader is a program sponsored by Kiwanis International. It is designed to give students the tools they need to be service leaders in their school, church and community.

Chaperones…
Just like 4-H events, the Key Leader leadership training event is also well chaperoned (one adult chaperone to every 10 participants). Kiwanis requires that all chaperones must register a minimum of three weeks in advance. A thorough background check will be completed on every adult before his or her registration is finalized.

Registration Information…
Only five weeks remain to register for the spring event. The deadline is March 14 for the March 28-30 training session. Visit www.key-leader.org to learn more or sign-up. Before registering, simply download the student brochure to learn what information is needed before completing the online registration. Participants will need to know their sponsor's name and email and their nominator's name and email.

Email Leslie Grossman Frederick at LeslieAnn@LeslieGrossman.com to get the sponsor's name. Leslie is the Key Leader chairman for Tennessee and Kentucky Kiwanis. Local Kiwanis clubs sponsor students to the event and help pay for expenses. 4-H agents may be listed as the nominator.

Cost…
Cost for student participants is $175. However, Tennessee Kiwanis clubs want to assist financially. Therefore, students may only incur a minimum charge (i.e. $25 to $50). Chaperone cost is $95. 4-H leaders and parents are encouraged and welcomed to attend as chaperones.

TENNESSEE 4-H’ERS NAMED PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD FINALISTS

Two Tennessee 4-H’ers have been recognized by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the Association of Secondary School Principals. Hannah Wolters from Maury County and Courtney Shelton from Lawrence County were two of six youth recognized as Tennessee distinguished finalists.

Courtney Shelton, 18, of Lawrenceburg, a senior at Lawrence County High School, initiated a campaign called Christmas Wishes to collect donations of toys, books, blankets, clothes and other comfort items for children who have to be removed from homes with methamphetamine labs. She also visited area schools to educate students about the dangers of methamphetamine.

Hannah Wolters, 15, of Culleoka, a sophomore at Silver Sun Christian Academy and a member of the Maury County 4-H, volunteered to raise and train a guide dog for a handicapped person. Hannah spent 14 months caring for a black Labrador puppy, teaching her manners and basic commands and developing her social skills before returning her to an organization serving the disabled.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes individuals in grades 5-12 solely on the basis of their volunteer activities. Young volunteers can apply through middle and high schools, county 4-H programs and other officially designated local organizations. Congratulations to Courtney and Hannah on this honor.

UT BLOCK AND BRIDLE ROUNDUP IS MARCH 1

Greetings! Wanted to let you know that the 2008 Block and Bridle Roundup is set for March 1, 2008. The dairy and meats contests will be very similar to past years. The livestock contest will have a few changes. Information on the events is posted at animalscience.ag.utk.edu/block&bridleclub/roundup.htm.

Registration will once again be online and will be mandatory. The deadline is February 25, 2008. This greatly helped last year’s registration process on Saturday morning go very smoothly. We plan to continue that this year. Links to registration process are at the Web site list above.

As part of Roundup this year, we are planning a canned food drive to benefit the Salvation Army. If students bring four (4) non-perishable cans of food, we will deduct $3 from the price of a Block and Bridle Round Up t-shirt for them. That would make t-shirts cost $7 plus four cans of food.

We have tweaked the schedule a little this year and plan to have the awards ceremony earlier. Hopefully this will allow more teams to stay for ceremony and maybe even the collegiate contest later that evening.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Looking forward to seeing you at Roundup 2008.
