HAVE WE LOST THE FUN IN YOUTH ATHLETICS?
Below is an excerpt from an article by Todd M. Kays, PhD, sport psychologist. This information is related to the 2008 junior 4-H camp curriculum.
| "Youth sports are extremely different today compared to 20-30 years ago. Although we expect sports to be a business at the professional level, we do not generally expect them to be business-like at the college, high school and youth levels. Unfortunately, however, youth sports have become more of a business than most people would like to admit. And with this business attitude comes pressure. Parents make comments about their children being the next Mia Hamm, Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods. Furthermore, it used to be that only colleges recruited student-athletes, but now it is very common for high school coaches, parents and student-athletes to be "recruiting" student-athletes in middle school. Wanting our children to be successful is normal, but we need to keep things in perspective. We need to make sure that the FUN never leaves youth sports." |

HELP 4-H PLANT A MILLION TREES
Members of the Pacifica 4-H Club in California have launched the 4-H Million Trees (4HMT) project. This large-scale service learning project has the goal to plant one million trees across the United States to beautify our country, absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide and combat global climate change.
The 4HMT project is supported at the highest national level. A memorandum of understanding with the Arbor Day Foundation has been approved and signed by Dr. Cathann Kress, Director, Youth Development, National 4-H Headquarters. Dr. Kress will post a USDA press release at www.csrees.usda.gov/newsroom/newsroom.html to announce this partnership.
To find out how your 4-H members can become part a national network to meet this goal of planting one million trees, go to 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/4HMTinvitation.pdf. This URL will give you an invitation to participate outlining all the details.

SAUCONY RUN FOR GOOD PROGRAM
That fourth “H” in the 4-H pledge, Health, seems to be one that is getting a lot of focus lately. From childhood obesity to high blood pressure, our youth are dealing with many health problems that could potentially be avoided. The Saucony Run for Good program provides grant funds to local youth service organizations, which have an educational focus on running and/or fitness. This grant would be a great source of funding for a nutrition, health and fitness project group, 4-H afterschool club or Tennessee Shapes Up project. For more information about this grant, visit www.sauconyrunforgood.com/.

SUPER Q & A: PART #5
As I receive emails or calls on questions about SUPER Enrollment module or reporting
questions, I will try to share these so everyone can benefit from the questions asked.
| Q. |
Do 4-H teens need to be entered in the enrollment section pertaining to volunteers if they serve as a volunteer? |
| A. |
Yes. This is different from before. When we entered volunteers in Lotus Notes it was to complete a Risk Management report for UT. 4-H volunteer and 4-H teen volunteer data was collected in Blue Ribbon. The SUPER enrollment module allows us to collect data for Risk Management reporting requirements and Extension reporting requirement. In SUPER, teens are entered as a volunteer for reporting purposes... not for risk management purposes. If you do not enter teens as a volunteer, at the end of the year when you complete the Annual 4-H Enrollment report you will have “0's" for youth in the volunteer section of the report. If a teen volunteers for any Extension program, they need to be designated as a volunteer also. To do this open their file and on the left hand menu select the “Volunteerism” tab. Once their name appears in the box, click the “edit” button and select “yes” for Extension volunteer. You do not have to answer anything else. Save and the task is complete. |
| |
|
| Q. |
If a volunteer is recruited to attend 4-H Congress do I enter them in SUPER so I can register them? |
| A. |
All 4-H volunteers attending any 4-H event must have an approved application on file and be enrolled in SUPER. The purpose of enrollment is not to make registration easier. UT and the 4-H Youth Development Department have requirements to ensure the safety of youth and adults and for liability purposes. If the event involves over night stay, use Form 809. |
In collecting the registration data for 4-H Congress, we have noticed some counties enter enrollee’s name using all capital letters. We would like to request that as you enter new enrollee’s, please capitalize only the first letter of their name. This really helps us as we develop housing lists and name tags for the events.
If you questions or comments, please send by email to cburgos@utk.edu or call me at 865-974-2128.
