KNOX COUNTY LEADS STATE IN HONOR CLUB INITIATES

Knox County is currently the top county in the state in terms of number of Honor Club initiates for 2008. As of March 28, they had 27 new Honor Club members approved for membership. Putnam County was second with 13 initiates; Henry and Sumner were tied for third with 12; and Houston was fifth with 9. Eastern is the top region with 64 initiates.

We are convinced there is a positive correlation between the number of Honor Club members a county can qualify and the quality of the 4-H program in the county. Honor Club membership is based on participation. Unless many participation opportunities are made available, not many 4-H’ers will be able to qualify for Honor Club recognition. Go to 4h.tennessee.edu/honorclub/howmany.htm for a complete listing of Honor Club initiates by region and county for January, February and March of this year.

TARGET STORES OFFER LOCAL GRANTS

Many of us incorporate art education in our 4-H program. For many of the project and activities that we offer, there is already an art component. To help foster the experiences that youth receive through art, Target is offering competitive grants averaging from $1,000 - $3,000 to provide opportunities for school-age youth in the area of art education and enrichment. For more information, visit sites.target.com/site/en/corporate/page.jsp?contentId=PRD03-003407. The application deadline is May 31, 2008.

UTK BLOCK AND BRIDLE CLUB LAMB SALE AND SKILL-A-THON COMPETITION

The UTK Block and Bridle Club Lamb Sale will take place Saturday, April 5. Viewing will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the sale starting at 3:00 p.m. The sale will be held in the Brehm Animal Science Arena. At this time it looks like there will be 48-55 quality lambs for sale. This is the largest number of lambs we have had in several years with several well-known and respected club lamb producers consigning animals. If anyone is interest in selling lambs or that has any questions, please email Ryan Hensley at rhensle5@utk.edu or call 865-679-1862.

The skill-a-thon competition will begin at 11:00 a.m. The competition will be divided into two age divisions: 4-7th grades and 8-12th grades. The first place winners in each division will be awarded a $75 voucher to be used toward the purchase of a lamb in the B&B Club Lamb Sale; second will receive a $50 voucher; and third will receive a $25 voucher. Dwight Loveday will be assisting in the planning of the skill-a-thon competition. This is a great opportunity for the 4-H’ers to practice skill-a-thon and earn some money to purchase their lamb.

A local 4-H club will be providing a BBQ lunch for a cost of $5 per plate. The lunch includes a BBQ pork sandwich, chips, a drink and a dessert.
