MTSU BLOCK AND BRIDLE CLUB SPONSORING BEEF CAMP

The Block and Bridle Club at Middle Tennessee State University is sponsoring the MTSU Beef Camp at the Tennessee Livestock Center on the MTSU campus. This year's event will be held June 11-14, 2008. Check in on June 11 will begin at 12:00 noon. Beef Camp is open to youth in the 4th through 12th grades (as of January 1, 2008) and requires a registration fee of $100, plus a $15 per head stall fee for bedding. Participants are required to bring a calf to Beef Camp this year. Registration fees, in combination with sponsorship, will cover the costs for lodging (three nights), meals, activities, learning sessions, awards, and a Beef Camp T-shirt.

Outstanding educational opportunities (with a little fun thrown in) are planned for this year's event. A few topics and activities that have been planned include:

* Livestock equipment identification
* Beef Quiz Bowl
* Herdsman's Quiz
* Livestock judging clinic and contest
* Barnyard Olympics
* Showmanship and grooming demonstrations

The annual Beef Camp Showmanship Contest will be held in conjunction with this year's event. A list of essentials for Beef Camp along with the rules and regulations can be downloaded from 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/beefcamp08.doc. Additional information is also posted on at www.mtsu.edu/~jggentry. The registration form, medical release form and registration fee should be postmarked by no later than May 20, 2008. Please make checks payable to MTSU Block and Bridle Club. If you have any questions please contact Dr. Jessica Carter at 615-898-2419 or jgcarter@mtsu.edu or Andy Higgins at 615-330-6446. We hope to see you at Beef Camp!

STATE DAIRY BOWL ENTRIES DUE SOON

The Tennessee State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl will be held Friday, May 30, 2008, at the Central Region office (Ellington Center) in Nashville in conjunction with the June Dairy Month Kick Off luncheon. Rules for the contest are provided in the Tennessee 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Manual at animalscience.ag.utk.edu/dairy/dairy_4-H_quiz_bowl.htm. Contest start time will be announced at a later date, but it is anticipated that the start time will be 8:30 a.m. CDT. More information on the timing of the contest will be made available as soon as entries are completed.

Entries for the quiz bowl should be made by May 1, 2008. Online registration may be found at animalscience.ag.utk.edu/dairy/dairy_4-H_quiz_bowl.htm. Each county may enter up to two senior and two junior high teams. Each senior team will consist of four members from their county designated by a coach or agent. Each junior high team will be allowed to have either three or four members. One or more alternates may be entered as substitutes. Senior youth may only participate once at the national contest in Louisville. Agents are responsible for certifying eligibility.

Senior Age Division: Contestants must be 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th graders as of January 1, 2008. Team members must have reached their 15th birthday during the current contest year, but have not passed their 19th birthday. (Contestants may attend a college beyond high school to participate in Louisville. However, club members who enroll in or audit a dairy science or animal science course prior to the fall term are not eligible.)

Junior High Age Division: Contestants must be 6th, 7th or 8th graders as of January 1, 2007.

There are no fees for the contest and teams are invited to join the June Dairy Month Kickoff luncheon for the awards presentation.

“TUNES 4 TROOPS” A HUGE SUCCESS!

Delegates to State 4-H Congress truly learned the importance of service as they collected CDs and DVDs to be sent to troops overseas as part of the “Tunes 4 Troops” project. This year's delegation to State 4-H Congress collected an astounding 1,231 CDs and DVDs for the troops. These were mailed directly to service men and women serving in the Armed Forces. We were able to fill seven large boxes and send them to military bases all over the world.

Congratulations to the Eastern Region for collecting the most items... 452. The county which collected the most items was Anderson County with 195 items. A special thanks to everyone who donated to this worthy cause and made a difference in the life of a soldier.
