EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR 2008 ROCK EAGLE WORKSHOP PROPOSALS
Alabama 4-H is looking for just a few more workshop and funshop proposals. They are extending the deadline for proposals to April 18. If you did not have time the first go around or would like to submit an additional workshop, please get your workshop proposal in by April 18. There is currently only one session offered by Tennessee! I know there are plenty of volunteers and agents with great program ideas. Please consider offering a class or funshop!
The Southern Region 4-H Leader Forum is a great place to learn about 4-H programs and get tons of new ideas. The forum will be held at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Georgia, October 2-5, 2008.
Concurrent sessions will be an hour and a half in length and may be in any form deemed effective (presentations, panel discussions or experiential learning opportunities). All presenters are responsible for their own expenses including conference registration, travel, lodging, meals, specialized equipment rental and handouts. The use of technology is encouraged and some equipment will be made available.
All submissions will be selected by review committee with representatives from each state and judged utilizing the following guidelines:
* Useful and relevant
* Contributes new knowledge
* Clarity and completeness
* Appropriate instructional techniques |
Proposals should be submitted by email or fax to Nancy G. Alexander, 4-H Specialist, Volunteerism and Fund Development. Nancy’s email is alexana@auburn.edu and her fax number is 334-844-2252. The proposal form is available from 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/WorkshopProposal08.doc.
Please let me know if you are submitting a proposal. I will be glad to assist in any way I can.
You can reach me at 865-974-2128 or by email at cburgos@utk.edu.

FUNDING FROM TENNESSEE FARM BUREAU
Many counties collaborate with their local Farm Bureau office through fund development, volunteer opportunities and 4-H programming. The Tennessee Farm Bureau offers training and grants for local schools, 4-H clubs, etc. through its Ag in the Classroom program. Free one-day workshops focusing on the Ag in the Classroom program are provided for classroom teachers, 4-H agents and other educators. These workshops, offered throughout the summer and around the state, provide educators with a resource kit full of lesson plans and curriculum for use in their teaching.
The Farm Bureau also offers outdoor classroom garden grants. This is an excellent opportunity for county Extension offices to partner with the Farm Bureau and a local school. More information on the training and grant funding can be found at www.tnfarmbureau.org/index.asp?view=AgInTheClassroom.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK
National Volunteer week, a service of the Points of Light Foundation and sponsored by Target, is fast approaching. National Volunteer Week will be celebrated April 27 - May 3, 2008. This year's theme is "Volunteer to Change the World."
National Volunteer Week designates a special time to recognize and celebrate the tremendous efforts of volunteers. This is a time to highlight 4-H volunteers for their efforts, support and involvement in 4-H. They remain one of our most valuable assets. Volunteers not only give of their time and skills - they "inspire by example" - they both encourage those they help and motivate others to serve! This week is also a great opportunity to showcase planned service projects, recognize youth and adult volunteers, and create an awareness of the positive change in your local community due to volunteer efforts.
Points of Light Foundation publishes an annual guide to help celebrate this week. For more information about National Volunteer Week, please visit the Points of Light Foundation Web site at http://www.pointsoflight.org/programs/seasons/nvw/.
The Web site offers an array of resources and ideas such as... Additional Ways to Thank Your Volunteers.
| * |
Recognize a "Volunteer of the Month" in you r newsletter or on your website. Also, include information why the volunteer received this type of recognition.. Include photos as well. |
| * |
Distribute bumper stickers or other promotional items to recognize volunteer contributions. |
| * |
Honor the first volunteer recruited during National Volunteer Week. Give this volunteer special prizes or recognition. |
| * |
Create a National Volunteer Week yearbook, which can be displayed in a library, courthouse lobby, or another public office. You can also create a display or exhibit at a local public office. |
| * |
Ask local radio and television stations to run a week-long series that recognizes a different volunteer for each day of National Volunteer Week. |

NOT TOO LATE TO AUDITION FOR PERFORMING ARTS TROUPE
Applications are still being accepted for 2008 Tennessee 4-H Performing Arts Troupe. Live auditions were held on March 29, but interested youth may still apply via video tape/DVD. There are openings for male and female vocalists and dancers.
Each vocalist must have at least one selection with musical accompaniment. A dancer or vocalist may also include a group performance where the individual is clearly identified. It is desirable for all vocal applicants to include at least one selection that includes movement and dance. Video auditions should be sent to:
Central Region Extension Office
Attention: Jim Stewart
5201 Marchant Drive
Nashville, TN 37211 |
Audition applications are posted on the Performing Arts Troupe Web site at 4hperformers.tennessee.edu/. You can also download a promotional video of the troupe!
Members interested in joining the technical staff may also apply online. At this time, we do not have any openings for technical members. However, 4-H'ers are welcome to apply just in case there is a need for additional help during the year.
Current troupe members who wish to return need to fill out an online application only. A video/DVD or live audition is not required for those wishing to return.
We are excited about this unique opportunity for our talented youth! Please promote the troupe to your 4-H members. Contact me if you have any questions or concerns!

RECOGNITION FOR VOLUNTEERS AND 4-H FAMILIES
Recognition is one of the components of the 4-H Youth Development program. We have volunteer leaders and volunteer families that are committed to family, youth and their community. They are making a difference in their community and motivating others to be involved as well. The Tennessee 4-H recognition program offers two recognition opportunities for 4-H volunteers. You probably have several deserving nominees in your county. Please take some time to review the requirements for each award.
State Adult Leader Recognition
This program gives recognition to an outstanding volunteer leader who has served five or more years. Each county may submit one nominee to the region. Each region will select two nominees for state competition. County winners will receive a Charline Hamilton Powell Leader Recognition certificate and the state winner an engraved plaque. Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kant of Blount County sponsor this recognition. The state winner will receive a trip to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. The application form may be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/index.htm.
W.M. & Ruth Hale Master 4-H Family Recognition
The Hale Master 4-H Families receive a framed certificate at the county level, engraved plaques at the regional level and a framed Tennessee Master 4-H Family medallion at the state level. The state awards are presented at State 4-H Roundup. Each county may recognize one family annually, plus one additional family for every 100 volunteer leaders. The Hale Master Family nomination form is available at 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/index.htm. |
Nomination forms are due to the state 4-H office every year on June 1. The nominations should be sent to the state office by the region program leaders. Check with your regional office for the regional deadline.
If you have a volunteer that has been nominated in the past but did not receive the award, consider re-submitting an updated application. Make sure they still meet all requirements.

SUPER Q&A: PART #6
This week’s question involves SUPER and PEN. I love PEN! It is so easy to use!
| Q. |
After entering survey results in PEN, I went to the SUPER Delivery module. Do I enter the outcomes manually or is there an “import data from PEN” feature? |
| A. |
At the moment, there is no feature to import data from PEN to SUPER. Here’s what to do.
| 1. |
Enter survey results in PEN. |
| 2. |
Create a topic report in PEN (see pages 27 - 29 of the PEN User Guide). |
| 3. |
Enter data into SUPER Delivery (Outcomes). |
|
For “Communicating-Public Speaking” enter responses for “ I can Do It Myself.” For all other life skills, enter the sum of responses for the last two answer categories. For example, add “Definitely True” and “Probably True” for Citizenship and then enter the sum in Delivery.
Continue sending questions to Carmen Burgos at cburgos@utk.edu or call 865-974-2128.

TENNESSEE SHEEP PRODUCERS TO HOST SALE/JUDGING CONTEST
The annual Tennessee Sheep Producers Association Sale will be held on Saturday, April 19, at the Ward Ag Center (Wilson County Fairgrounds) in Lebanon. The sale will offer some excellent market lamb and breeding ewe prospects. The sale will start at 1:00 p.m. CDT.
There will be a sheep judging contest starting at 9:00 a.m. The contest is open to all youth. Counties may enter a team(s) or members may judge as individuals. Awards totaling $1500 will be presented as gift certificates to be used at the sale. Contestants will judge five classes of ewes and lambs and one class of fleeces. This will be excellent training for your 4-H livestock judging teams.
Please share this information with 4-H members and adults who might be interested. Contact Mark Powell (615-519-7796) for additional information about the judging contest or Ralph Lovely (865-604-5747) for more information about the sale.

UNIQUE SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: HELP MAKE THE SWITCH FROM ANALOG TO DIGITAL
Starting February 17, 2009, televisions will switch from analog reception to digital - meaning televisions that currently receive signals through antenna, or "rabbit ears," will no longer work. CSREES is working with the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to inform citizens of the switch from analog to digital and their options, including how to get a coupon for a converter box. The converter box will allow televisions with rabbit ears to receive the new digital signal without needing to purchase cable or a new television.
As part of this process, National 4-H Headquarters has created a Digital Television Transition service project for 4-H’ers. Digital Television Transition kits will be provided for distribution at county/regional fairs. The kits will include fact sheets and giveaway items, providing 4-H'ers with an opportunity to interact with the public and help educate them on the transition. If you would like to receive free FCC kits to distribute at your county or state fair this year, please notify Cassie Copen at ccopen@csrees.usda.gov by Friday, April 21. Be sure to include:
* Date of your fair
* Number of kits needed
* Contact name/delivery address |
For more information regarding the Digital Television Transition, visit the FCC Web site at www.dtv.gov/. To learn more about the converter box coupon program, visit www.dtv2009.gov/.
