2008 SOUTHERN REGION VOLUNTEER FORUM - 4-H: A TASTE FOR ALL

Louisiana is the host state for the 2008 Southern Region Volunteer Forum. As this year's theme implies, 4-H: A Taste for All will offer unique learning experiences, cultural exchange and fun for all. If you have never attended this forum, it is an excellent place to share and learn about 4-H programs implemented throughout the Southern states. Volunteers from 13 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands participate and bring a wealth of experience, information, materials and fun... providing an excellent learning environment!

Participation in the forum is a great experience for volunteers and agents. It offers the opportunity to network with other states, exchange creative ideas and make new friends! It is an educational, motivational and cultural experience. Some of the special events include a "Holiday on the Bayou," Cajun dancing, and a Mardi Gras Ball. There will even be a mask making workshop to properly accent your costume!

There are two major changes this year: 1) registration and 2) the framework of the service project. The registration fee of $225.00 is the same as last year. This includes meals, lodging and a t-shirt. Additional fees apply for individuals who plan to arrive at the camp prior to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2 to cover meals and lodging. This year, tickets will be issued for early meals. If you plan on arriving early, please make the proper selection on your registration form so the tickets can be requested.

Registration will be through SUPER this year. A registration form is provided on the Web site for volunteers and agents to complete. However, forms are to be returned to the county office so delegates may be properly registered through SUPER. Agents will then forward the forms from their county to the state office with registration fees. The state office cannot register volunteers in SUPER for this event. It can only be done through the county office. Following registration instructions will avoid delays in the process.

Registration is due August 13, 2008. After August 27, 2008 a $50.00 late fee will be charged. The planning committee established this fee to allow the hosting state proper time to place orders for printing programs and bags.

The service project offers an opportunity for involvement from every county, even if you do not have delegates. The project, "Developing Dollars for a Cure," focuses on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a terminal disease that strikes someone every 90 minutes. The project is in honor of our Tennessee delegate and the official forum photographer, Ralph Meacham. You can find details for the service project in the informational booklet on the Web site. It's a great opportunity to involve Honor Club and All Stars!

You are not too late to submit a proposal for an educational exhibit. This year, we would like to have an abundance of educational exhibits showcasing 4-H program ideas and materials. I know we have great things going on across the state of Tennessee! If you are interested in sharing one of your programs with others, check the Web site for more information and a proposal form.

Louisiana has created a great 22 page informational booklet full of information .To access this publication and the registration form go to 4h.tennessee.edu/volunteers/rockeagle/.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the information in the packet, please contact Carmen Burgos by phone at 865-974-2128 or email at cburgos@utk.edu.

JUNIOR MEAT GOAT FIELD DAY HELD IN WOODBURY

The annual Junior Meat Goat Field Day was held Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the Cannon County Fairgrounds in Woodbury, Tennessee. Over 65 4-H'ers, leaders, parents and agents attended the event. The field day started with a judging contest on three pens of goats. Winners in the five divisions were:

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY AT JUNE DAIRY MONTH LUNCHEON

We are also looking for 5-6 teen leaders who are not serving as June Dairy Month chairpersons to serve in leadership roles for the chairperson training sessions at the June Dairy Month Kick Off luncheon on May 30, 2008. We would especially like to have teens who have been winners in the promotion event in the past or who are active in the dairy or dairy foods projects. If you would like to nominate someone, please send me a note with the name, address and brief statement about why you think they would be good in this leadership role.

NATIONAL YOUTH TRAFFIC SAFETY MONTH

National Youth Traffic Safety Month addresses the number one cause of death for youth in our nation. Every year over 6,000 youth die in traffic related crashes. Many of these crashes are caused by avoidable behavior. Youth can take specific actions to be safer as drivers and passengers. National Youth Traffic Safety Month is also a time to celebrate and promote those who work to help keep youth safe on the roads. Youth will be participating in activities to thank and support those working so hard to protect them.

Would you like to receive a $1,000 award for your efforts to reduce teen driving crashes in your community? Start working now on plans for this year!

National Organizations for Youth Safety has once again designated May as National Youth Traffic Safety Month because it is an important time for teens to be focused on driving safety. To support National Youth Traffic Safety Month and as an incentive, Allstate Foundation is awarding $1,000 to 50 local youth organizations for their youth-developed and implemented projects that demonstrate a strong focus geared towards youth traffic safety. With prom, graduation and summer trips just ahead, youth-led teams can work together with Allstate Foundation and National Organizations for Youth Safety to decrease the number of traffic-related deaths and injuries that involve young drivers and passengers.

For more information on how YOU can be involved, visit the NYTSM Web site at www.noys.org/YouthTrafSafe/toolkit.html.
