4-H PROMOTIONAL ITEMS FOR SALE

Interested in customized items to promote the 4-H program? Looking for a fund-raising opportunity? The 4-H Youth Development Department has a few items available for purchase by the county offices.

First, we have one-of-a-kind glow in the dark, neon green silicone wristbands, which read "Tennessee 4-H." These wristbands were sold at 4-H Roundup. If counties are interested in purchasing them, you may purchase 20-49 for $3.00 each or 50+ for $2.50 each. These are great items to promote the 4-H program. For pictures of the wristbands, go to 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/images/wristband.gif.

We are also selling Clover Country CD's. We only have a few left, and have decided to allow counties to purchase 15+ for the county price of $7.00. Otherwise, you may order up to 15 for $10.00 each. Again, we only have a few of these CD's left. These 4-H CD's have hit songs from eleven country music artists, who are also former 4-H members.

We also have a few "4-H: Wired for Success" blue t-shirts and "4-H: A Timeless Tradition" grey t-shirts available. They are $10.00 each. Please e-mail me for specifics on sizes.

Please share this information with your volunteer leaders, 4-H members, etc.

COFFEE COUNTY WILDLIFE JUDGING TEAM NAMED NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

The Coffee County 4-H wildlife judging team won first place at the 2008 National 4-H Wildlife Judging Contest held July 23-27 at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. Team members were Nathan Slone, Andrew Russell, Andy Brown and Deborah Anderson. The team was coached by Sara Steelman, Coffee County Soil Conservation District technician as well as Jeremy Mills and Jonathan Mills, members of the 2006 state champion 4-H wildlife judging team from Coffee County.

In addition to being the champion overall team, the Coffee County team also won the award for the first place wildlife management plan. This plan was written as a team effort and included items such as management objectives, species to be managed, practices to be implemented for the species and evaluation efforts for the plan. Each team member received a Walkie Talkie radio set for writing the winning wildlife management plan. Each team member also received a GPS unit and check for $250 for winning the overall competition.

Individually, Deborah Anderson won the award for second high individual in the wildlife management practices category and second high individual in the oral defense of the management plan category. Deborah was also sixth high individual overall. Nathan Slone was fourth high individual in the wildlife management practice category, sixth high individual in the wildlife quiz/I.D. category and fifth high individual overall. Andy Brown was recognized at the fourth high individual in wildlife quiz/I.D category and as the fourth high individual overall. Andrew Russell was recognized as the sixth high individual in the wildlife management practice category and as eighth high individual overall.

The team was accompanied on the trip by coach Sara Steelman and UT Extension agent Stephen Harris. While at the competition, the team stayed in a dormitory at the Oklahoma State University. The team was treated to presentations on Native American dancing and pioneer living at the beautiful Theta Pond area on the Oklahoma State University campus. Some of the team members visited a water park while others visited an aquarium on the fun day of the competition. The team would like to thank everyone who helped them reach and win this national competition. A special thanks goes to the Southern Middle Tennessee Quail Unlimited Chapter #696 for their generous sponsorship to help pay expenses for the trip. Appreciation is also extended to the Coffee County Soil Conservation District and the Coffee County 4-H Club for their support of the team in this contest.

SERVICE PROJECTS BENEFITTING OUR MILITARY PERSONNEL

Many of you are familiar with the service project conducted as part of 4-H Congress, “Tunes 4 the Troops.” I want to remind everyone that this project is still going on nationally. If you are interested in working with this worthwhile project, please visit www.tunes4thetroops.org/.

In addition to this project, another military related project is “Cell Phones for Soldiers” where civic groups can donate old cell phones. These telephones are sold to a recycling company, and the money raised is used to purchase calling cards for military personnel. You can either mail in your telephones (postage paid) or drop them off at a participating AT&T wireless store. For more information about this program, please visit www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.

Either of these service learning projects are great ways for 4-H members to support our nation's military personnel.
