OUTDOOR CLASSROOM SYMPOSIUM

Daily doses of nature help children have less stress, more creativity, better concentration and higher self-esteem. Give them this opportunity in an outdoor classroom. The Outdoor Classroom Symposium will be held Friday, May 8, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Montgomery Bell State Park in Dickson. Concurrent sessions will include topics such as gardening for wildlife, math gardens, developing and using a wetland, cultivating natural intelligence, birds as educators, the naturalist's journal, finding support/grant partnerships and activities for teaching all subjects outdoors.

This workshop is for teachers, administrators, custodians, parents and non-formal educators. Schools are encouraged to send a team consisting of faculty, staff and parents. The Tennessee Department of Education will provide a limited amount of funding to reimburse public education systems for substitutes employed to cover for teachers in attendance. Reimbursement will be available on a first-come first-served basis.

Space is limited. Mail your completed registration form and check today. A $75 individual registration fee includes all sessions, luncheon, conference materials and individual TEEA membership. Registration deadline is April 3, 2009. See 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas09/attach/TOCSReg09.pdf for a registration form.

The Williamson County team placed 15th with team members Sarah Norman, Ethan Gossett and Thomas Mendl.

VIRGINIA INTERSTATE EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITY

I recently received an interstate exchange request from Washington County, Virginia. Washington County is located in the mountains of Southwest Virginia near the Tennessee border. The county seat is Abingdon. The exchange group is approximately 15-20 youth living in rural and urban areas. They are looking to host a group in 2009 or 2010 with a return visit by their 4-H members the following summer. If you are interested, please contact Dara Bohon at dcbohon@embarqmail.com or Becky Worth-Jones at beckwj@hotmail.com.
