4-H AFTER SCHOOL SURVEY
National 4-H Council is collecting information on counties with 4-H Afterschool clubs. Many of you are involved in providing 4-H Afterschool opportunities for your 4-H members. If your county had 4-H Afterschool clubs during the 2007-08 programming year, please complete the survey at ext.msstate.edu/survey/afterschool/. Your input will help us leverage funding as we apply for grants in the future.

CROCKETT COUNTY 4-H’ERS ATTEND PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION
Two Crockett County 4-H members are in Washington, D.C. this week for events surrounding the presidential inauguration. Joanna Wilson and Emily Richards will help the nation welcome its 44th President, Barack Obama, by witnessing the inauguration firsthand as part of the Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference (PYIC). Joanna and Emily were invited to attend PYIC as a result of their past participation in the National Youth Leadership Conference. They were nominated to the National Youth Leadership Conference by their Extension agent, Tonya Bain. Congratulations to both these youth for being part of the history-making event.

RHEA COUNTY MEATS TEAM TAKES 6TH IN DENVER
The Rhea County 4-H meats judging team recently took 6th place in the 4-H Meat Evaluation Contest in Denver, Colorado, January 7-11. Team members included Hannah Wright, Brandon Pritchett, Justin Lamb and Aaron Johnson with alternates Brad Tollett and Junior Flynn. The Rhea County team was among teams from thirty states gathered to compete in the various contests held in conjunction with the National Western 4-H Roundup.
While at the contest, team members identified thirty cuts of beef, pork and lamb. Contestants had to include the wholesale and retail cut as well as species, type of cut and cookery method. The team also ranked 6th in retail and wholesale meat classes consisting of beef and pork carcasses, pork hams, beef ribs, pork rib chops and beef porterhouse steaks. Team members also had to defend their placings by giving three sets of oral reasons. The team was coached by Extension agent Jerry Lamb.

SMITH COUNTY LIVESTOCK TEAM COMPETES AT NATIONAL WESTERN
The Smith County 4-H livestock judging team competed at the National Western Round-up 4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Denver, Colorado, January 8-11, 2009. Team members Amber Allen, Holly Dickens, Amanda Piper and Monica Wilmore were coached by Bill and Connie Kuecker and accompanied to Denver by Smith County 4-H agent Carol McDonald. The Smith County team earned a spot in this national contest by placing second at the State 4-H Livestock Judging contest last summer in Murfreesboro.
The Renaissance Denver Hotel was the conference headquarters. Sightseeing and trying to find snow in the Denver area was the highlight of the first day in Colorado for the Smith County team. As a part of the conference, on Thursday night the girls enjoyed the delicious Trail Dust Steakhouse and dance floor, attended the opening banquet on Friday evening and went to the Amazing Jake's Food & Fun Entertainment Center on Saturday night. During the day on Friday, the team traveled about an hour from Denver to Colorado State University Equine Center in Fort Collins for a workout practice session.
On Saturday, the team competed among 25 other state winning teams, including Canada, in the judging contest. During the contest, the teams evaluated 10 classes of livestock (cattle, sheep, goats and sheep) and gave six sets of oral reasons. The Smith County team placed 14th overall and was 9th in beef and 11th in reasons. Amanda Piper received 10th high individual in goats and Monica Wilmore placed 12th high individual in sheep.
The team had the opportunity to visit the National Western Stock Show, the second largest stock show in the world which attracts people from all over North America. The entire Roundup Conference and Judging Contest was truly a great experience for each member of the team.

Wii RESOURCES
Many of you are familiar with the Cooking Mama Wii game I have told you about/demonstrated in the past. This game (which is on sale in most stores for $30 or less) is a great way to teach/reinforce cooking and nutrition skills with youth in a technological environment. Wii has recently released a new game called Cooking Mama World Kitchen. This game adds new cooking techniques, including learning several international recipes. There is also a Nintendo DS game (handheld game unit) called Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends. This would be a great resource to use for summer 4-H day camps, 4-H nutrition, health and fitness project groups, etc. More information, including informative videos, can be found at www.cookingmamacookoff.com/.
