4-H CONGRESS PRESS RELEASE FOR YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER

The 4-H Youth Development Department has created a press release for you to
use in your local newspaper to announce your county delegates’ trip to
State 4-H Congress. The press release is a general overview of the purpose
of Congress and the activities and events the delegates will participate in
at Congress. The press release can be found at
4h.tennessee.edu/ideas09/attach/CongressPressRelease.doc.

Please read the document carefully as blank spaces have been provided, such
as county and delegate names, in order to personalize the press release to
better reflect your county delegation's experiences. This is a Word
document. Simply, delete the lines and type in the appropriate names.

Please note, if you have delegates that are competing, running for office,
etc., you are encouraged to expand the next to the last paragraph to
announce those accomplishments. Please let me know if you have any
questions.

GET READY FOR ELECTRIC CAMP!

The 2009 4-H Electric Camp is scheduled for June 23-26. The camp is for 6th and 7th grade 4-H members as of January 1, 2009. Electric Camp is designed for 4-H'ers who have NOT previously attended. There is no return participation. Members do not have to be enrolled in the electric project to attend the camp.

Electric Camp is a fun-filled, rewarding adventure in electricity held at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The camp will feature learning centers staffed by electric utility professionals. Each learning center will use hands-on activities that allow the 4-H members to learn by doing. Previous electric camps have received rave reviews from the 4-H members, leaders and Extension staff that have attended.

The cost for the 2009 4-H Electric Camp will be $150. This fee includes the cost of meals, lodging, field trips, insurance, programs, etc. Transportation fees are covered by members of the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association.

Each region is eligible to send two adult volunteer leaders to the camp. Leaders should have an interest in the electric project. At least 12 camp assistants will also be selected to attend Electric Camp in a leadership capacity. Camp assistants must be senior 4-H members.

You will receive registration material from your regional office in the near future. Additional information is available on the Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/elecamp/.

MAKE IT AN HONOR TO BE IN HONOR CLUB

Honor Club is the first step in Tennessee’s three-level recognition program... Honor Club, All Stars and Vol State. Honor Club recognizes members for participation. Membership does not involve being the winner in any kind of competition. Members receive points just for participating. Any 4-H’er qualifying with the minimum number of points on the application can achieve Honor Club recognition.

How can you make it an honor to be in your county Honor Club? One way to make Honor Club special is to stage an impressive induction ceremony for all your new initiates. Recognize your initiates at an appropriate time in front of their parents, peers, county officials or others they view as important to them.

The Tennessee 4-H Honor Club Recognition Ceremony (EC750) is a step-by-step guide to staging a candlelight Honor Club initiation ceremony. The publication comes complete with a script, list of materials needed and staging diagram. If you do not have a copy in your office, it is available online from the “Forms & Materials” page on the Tennessee 4-H Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/. The direct link is 4h.tennessee.edu/forms/acrobat/ec750.pdf.

Honor Club recognizes members for meeting a standard of excellence and recognition is a strategy for helping young people become more capable and confident. Through the acknowledgment, affirmation, and positive reinforcement of members’ efforts, feeling of competence and capability increase and participation continues. An impressive initiation ceremony can be the first step in building that competence and capability in your Honor Club members.
