MARION COUNTY TAKES TENNESSEE STATE LIFESMARTS TITLE
The Marion County 4-H LifeSmarts team captured the Tennessee State LifeSmarts championship by successfully fielding questions about real-life marketplace issues at Lebanon on March 7, 2009. Team members were Ethan Simmons, Brian White, Holly Prince and Lauren Hammer.
LifeSmarts, a consumer education competition that challenges teens in grades 9-12 about personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology and consumer rights and responsibilities, is a program of the National Consumer League. In Tennessee, UT Extension Family and Consumer Sciences specialists give leadership to the program.
Teens from across the state first competed online for a chance to go to the in-person state finals. The state champion Marion County High School 4-H’ers have qualified for the national LifeSmarts competition to be held April 25-28 in St. Louis, Missouri. They will be accompanied by Extension 4-H agent Vicki Lofty and Marion County High School principal Sherry Prince.
“LifeSmarts participants have gained many of the consumer “smarts” they’ll need to make it in the real world”, said coach Vicki Lofty. “We’re proud to have Marion County 4-H represent Tennessee at this nationals.”

"OUR HANDS TO A LARGER SERVICE" A HUGE SUCCESS!
Delegates to the 2009 Tennessee 4-H Congress learned the importance of service as they collected recreational items for Metro Parks and Recreation's senior citizen program and crayons/coloring books for the Children's Miracle Network. This year's Congress delegation collected an astounding 4,500 items for the Children's Miracle Network and over 300 recreational items (including bingo sets, board games, etc.) for Metro Parks and Recreation.
A special thanks to everyone who donated to these two worthy organizations. 4-H members really exemplified what they could do when they put their hands to a larger service.

PLEASE SAY THANK YOU
4-H delegates, volunteers and agents attending the 62nd Tennessee 4-H Congress have an important follow-up assignment... to say thank you to the donors who helped make Congress possible. Most delegates wrote a couple of thank you notes while at Congress, but more need to be written. For names and addresses of donors, and tips on how to write good thank you notes, please visit the 4-H Foundation Web site at 4hfoundation.tennessee.edu/thankyouships/.

RECOGNITION FOR VOLUNTEERS AND 4-H FAMILIES
Recognition is one of the components of the 4-H Youth Development program. We have volunteer leaders and volunteer families that are committed to family, youth and their community. They are making a difference in their community and motivating others to be involved as well. The Tennessee 4-H recognition program offers two recognition opportunities for 4-H volunteers. You probably have several deserving nominees in your county. Please take some time to review the requirements for each award.
State Adult Leader Recognition
This program gives recognition to an outstanding volunteer leader who has served five or more years. Each county may submit one nominee to the region. Each region will select two nominees for state competition. County winners will receive a Charline Hamilton Powell Leader Recognition certificate and the state winner an engraved plaque. Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kant of Blount County sponsor this recognition. The state winner will receive a trip to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. The application form may be found at
4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/index.htm.
W.M. and Ruth Hale Master 4-H Family Recognition
The Hale Master 4-H Families receive a framed certificate at the county level, engraved plaques at the regional level and a framed Tennessee Master 4-H Family medallion at the state level. The state awards are presented at State 4-H Roundup. Each county may recognize one family annually, plus one additional family for every 100 volunteer leaders. The Hale Master Family nomination form is available at 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/index.htm. Nomination forms are due to the state 4-H office every year on June 1. The nominations should be sent to the state office by the region program leaders. Check with your regional office for the regional deadline. |
If you have a volunteer that has been nominated in the past but did not receive the award, consider re-submitting an updated application. Make sure they still meet all requirements.
