2009 SOUTHERN REGION VOLUNTEER FORUM IS OCTOBER 1-4
Alabama is the host state for the 2009 Southern Region Volunteer Forum. This year's theme, “4-H Volunteers... A Southern Tradition,” will offer down home Southern fun and unique learning experiences. If you have never attended this forum, it is an excellent place to share and learn about 4-H programs implemented throughout the Southern states. Volunteers from 13 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands participate and bring a wealth of experience, information, materials and fun... providing an excellent learning environment!
Participation in the forum is a great experience for volunteers and agents. It offers the opportunity to network with other states, exchange creative ideas and make new friends! It is an educational, motivational and cultural experience. Some of the special events include one of the South's greatest traditions - FOOTBALL with a Southern Region tailgate party, a performance by “Clovers Unlimited,” Saturday night's dinner, will take on the feel of a Ducks Unlimited type dinner with great country cookin’, an auction, a raptor display and other natural resource activities. Speakers and entertainment include Jeanne Robertson, professional speaker, humorist, and author; The American Belles, known for their patriotic flair and harmonic vocal blend; and Deepstep, Georgia's 2008 Country Band of the Year.
The registration fee is $240.00. This includes meals, lodging and a t-shirt. Additional fees apply for individuals who plan to arrive at the camp prior to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1 to cover meals and lodging. As last year, tickets will be issued for early meals. If you plan on arriving early, please make the proper selection on your registration form so the tickets can be requested.
Registration will be through SUPER. A registration form is provided on the Web site for volunteers and agents to complete. However, forms are to be returned to the county office so delegates may be properly registered through SUPER. Agents will then forward their registration fees with a list of volunteer names to the state office. The state office cannot register volunteers in SUPER for this event. It can only be done through the county office. Following registration instructions will avoid delays in the process.
Registration is due August 12, 2009. After August 26, 2009 a $50.00 late fee will be charged. The planning committee established this fee to allow the hosting state proper time to place orders for printing programs and bags.
This year's service project focus is on Veterans Administration Hospitals and services. The service project offers an opportunity for involvement from every county, even if you do not have volunteers attending the forum. You can find details for the service project in the informational booklet on the Web site. It's a great opportunity to involve Honor Club and All Stars!
You are not too late to submit a proposal for an educational exhibit or a workshop!. This year, we would like to have an abundance of educational exhibits showcasing Tennessee 4-H program ideas and materials. I know we have great things going on across the state! If you are interested in sharing one of your programs with others, check the Web site for more information and a proposal form. Proposal form for the workshop is on the Web site also.
Alabama has created a great informational booklet full of information .To access this publication and the registration form go to 4h.tennessee.edu/volunteers/rockeagle/. If you have questions or concerns regarding the information in the packet, please contact Carmen Burgos by phone at 865-974-2128 or email at cburgos@utk.edu.

HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT MUST ACCOMPANY SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
We have received several Tennessee 4-H Scholarship applications with no high school transcript attached. Please note that scholarship section on page 7 of the application states...
| “Current high school transcript must be attached to this form. A.C.T., S.A.T. and other college entrance test scores may be attached if not recorded on the transcript. College transcript must also be attached if member had completed any college level courses.” |
Be sure to check your members’ applications when you sign them to make sure the high school transcript has been included. Applications without transcripts are often not seriously considered by the selection committee. If you have a member who has submitted an application without a transcript, there is still time to get that information to us in time for the selection process.

OPPORTUNITIES WITH OPERATION: MILITARY KIDS
The Tennessee 4-H Youth Development department is excited to launch the Operation: Military Kids (OMK) program statewide. This program is designed to provide opportunities for geographically dispersed military youth whose parents are currently deployed overseas. This is an opportunity for your county 4-H program to partner with local military personnel, conduct military related service learning projects and apply for funding to provide educational opportunities for military youth and their families. The OMK program impacts the entire Extension system in Tennessee so we want to encourage any Extension staff member to participate in an upcoming OMK overview via Centra. This one hour overview, entitled 4-H/OMK meeting, will take place on Thursday, May 28, 2009 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. EDT. Registration will be open in SUPER through Thursday, May 14, 2009. For those unable to attend, the session will be recorded and the link will be shared in a future email. If you have any questions, between now and May 28 about the OMK program, please do not hesitate to contact me.
