WHAT IMPACT DO WE MAKE?

Former Sevier County 4-H member and freshman at the University of the Cumberlands Seth Stoffle and debate partner Katie Riley were recently named the Christian College national champions after winning the Novice Duo Parliamentary Debate at the Christian College Forensics National Invitational Tournament at Biola University in California. Sevier County 4-H agent Glenn Turner shared an article with me from the Seymour Herald which shares a good unsolicited testimony for the value of the 4-H speaking contest. Seth credits 4-H with helping him get is start and says, “4-H definitely helped me get over some of my fears of public speaking.”

Glenn tells us Seth is one that did well at the county level and participated at the regional level, but was never in the state contest. This shows us it is not necessarily those who advance to state competition that reap the benefits of the 4-H youth development program. Impacts are made at all levels. Many times we cannot know the difference we make in a young person’s life when they participate in a 4-H club meeting. To read the Seymour Herald article, go to www.seymourherald.com/news/2009/apr/21/shs-grad-wins-national-debate/.
