4-H CAMP STAFF RIP-ROARING TO GO!
WOW! What great 4-H camp staffs! The 4-H camping season is off and going, and the staffs at Austin, Ridley and York are definitely up to the task. After this past training session, they are pumped up and ready for the summer. This year's staffs are energetic, enthusiastic and committed to the four priorities of safety, health, education and fun. Be ready for some intense, positive youth development this summer!
As a reminder from this past spring's planning meetings, this year's junior camp curriculum requires planning and preparation from all involved (teens, volunteers, etc). Please be ready ahead of time. In addition, if you need to contact the camps regarding the curriculum or schedule, please do so early... preferably at least seven days before your camp group arrives. The contacts at each camp are:
Ridley - Lisa Vasser
York - Melanie Henry, Melissa Ball and Jason Carter
Austin - Adrienne Crawford and Alan Rade |

“ENERGIZING TENNESSEE 4-H” FUNDS ELECTRIC CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS
Many of the counties who are conducting the "Energizing Tennessee 4-H" Energy Education program are sending youth to Electric Camp on partial or full scholarship. One of these counties, Hickman, boasts the largest county delegation with 34. This is THE featured 4-H SET program for Tennessee and will be available for all counties statewide next year. Counties receive hands-on training, free "science of energy" education kits and funds for energy education, including Electric Camp scholarships. Counties who completed the program this year will be eligible for more funds again next year. Be on the lookout for more information soon.
4-H Electric Camp registration is now closed and has switched to "waiting list" mode. If you wish to put a 4-H’er on the waiting list, please send all information as required in SUPER to your regional office.
We are expecting 267 4-H members for 4-H Electric Camp on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus, June 23-26. The Western Region has registered the most delegates.
Congratulations to everyone for their success in promoting 4-H Electric Camp. A special thanks to all who made this educational opportunity available to their 4-H members.

NASA ENGINEERING DESIGN CHALLENGE
Plant growth will be an important part of space exploration in the future as NASA plans for long-duration missions to the moon. NASA scientists anticipate astronauts may be able to grow plants on the moon, and the plants could be used to supplement meals.
In anticipation of the need for research into lunar plant growth, NASA and the International Technology Education Association, or ITEA, present the NASA Engineering Design Challenge: Lunar Plant Growth Chamber. Elementary, middle and high school students design, build and evaluate lunar plant growth chambers - while engaging in research - and standards-based learning experiences. Students participate in the engineering design process and learn how to conduct a scientific experiment.
Choose from three ways to participate in the challenge:
1. Design, build and evaluate a chamber
2. Design and evaluate a chamber
3. Evaluate a chamber |
Educators can order cinnamon basil seeds that have flown in space on the STS-118 space shuttle mission. Students can compare plants grown from both space-flown and Earth-based control seeds and test the designs of the lunar plant growth chambers. Seeds will be available as long as supplies last.

TENNESSEE 4-H'ERS TO ATTEND NICE CONFERENCE
Lindsey Clayton from Warren County and Morgan Beaty from Blount County have been selected to represent Tennessee at the 2009 National Institute on Cooperative Education (NICE) Conference . The conference will be held at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, July 25-29.
The conference is intended to provide a deeper understanding of cooperatives to the youth attending. Participants will gain an understanding of how cooperatives differ from other business forms and will hear cooperative success stories in both the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. In a team setting, attendees will serve as managers of a simulated cooperative store, competing with other stores in their market area for sales and profit. Teams will also analyze case studies, develop their own student-run cooperative, and participate in team-building and leadership development activities. The closing session will recognize the teams that have been the top performers in various conference activities.
Lindsey and Morgan were selected for this honor as result of being state finalists in Level II citizenship and leadership competition at Tennessee 4-H Congress earlier this spring. Blount County Extension agent Sharon Davis will be attending as a chaperone and Lindsey Rochelle, a 2008 NICE delegate from Hickman County, has been selected to return to the conference in a leadership role. The trip is sponsored by the Tennessee Council of Cooperatives.
