SUMNER COUNTY WINS TOP HONOR IN NATIONAL NEED PROGRAM

"Sumner County Keeping Green" was the theme for Sumner County's NEED (National Energy Education Development) project. Sumner County 4-H was declared the National Special Project of the Year by NEED's national awards review panel on April 29, which was comprised of leaders from the energy, education and government sectors. Sumner County 4-H will be recognized at the national recognition ceremonies, June 26-29 in Washington, D.C.

Sumner County took part in the "Energizing Tennessee 4-H" program that emphasizes energy education and 4-H SET. The program is sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, Office of Energy Policy.

Gwen Groves, Sumner County 4-H program assistant, reports that Sumner County 4-H started out by organizing an educational program as part of family fun night in October, 2008, where citizens in Portland were entertained by the Energy Vampire, Lucas Garrison. This was just the beginning. Other events included hayrides while demonstrating the chemical use of hand warmers, energy tips passed out to trick or treaters, displays at science fairs, tours of a biodiesel shop at a local high school and an adventure science museum. Photography, poster and recycled crafts contests were also conducted. Energy skits were performed by the senior 4-H'ers, and an alternative energy presentation was conducted by students at Station Camp High School.

Public service announcements, billboards, and TV cable stations helped to promote the program. State Senator Diane Black also made an appearance and spoke about the importance of recycling. Sumner County 4-H partnered with Cumberland Electric Membership, who donated CFLs, home surveys and prizes to be used at events. Sumner County Extension professionals conducted energy programs in 160 4th and 5th grade classrooms and 54 6th grade science classes educating 11,905 students about energy. Over 500 Change-a-Light Pledges were acquired, which will be saving these individuals a combined total of over $28,000 a year.

A total of 24 counties participated in the "Energizing Tennessee 4-H" program this first year. Statewide, over 25,000 youth contacts were made with over 4,500 Change-a-Light pledges acquired and 38 community events being conducted. 4-H professionals were also treated to an "Energy Tour" in April. Another year of the "Energizing Tennessee 4-H" program is being planned. More details to come.

TEXTING TAKING A TOLL ON TEENAGERS

They do it late at night when their parents are asleep. They do it in restaurants and while crossing busy streets. They do it in the classroom with their hands behind their back. They do it so much their thumbs hurt…The phenomenon is beginning to worry physicians and psychologists, who say it is leading to anxiety, distraction in school, falling grades, repetitive stress injury and sleep deprivation. - NYTimes.com

Katie Hafner of the New York Times has an interesting article about teenagers and texting. See the article at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/26/health/26teen.html#. It was the number one emailed article on NYTimes.com in the last 24 hours as of May 27, 2009.
