ACADEMIC CONFERENCE “THANK YOUS” ARE IMPORTANT

The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture hosted 142 junior high 4-H members for Academic Conference on the ag campus, June 9-12. The delegates had a very educational experience along with a lot of fun. The faculty and staff of the four divisions of the Institute of Agriculture are to be commended for the excellent job they did in preparing for and conducting the event.

The conference was sponsored by gifts from a variety of donors with an interest in providing positive youth development opportunities for Tennessee 4-H members. We hope each delegate will recognize the donors for their interest and support by writing a thank-you note now that they have returned home. The addresses are:

BEEF AND SHEEP EXPO ENTRY DEADLINE IS JUNE 15

Just a reminder that entries for the 2009 Tennessee Junior Livestock Exposition must be submitted by June 15, 2009. This includes online entry and the paper entries. Don't forget that copies of registration papers must accompany entries for registered heifers and registered ewes. Be sure to send the appropriate entry fees to the appropriate individual. State entries are to be submitted to Jim Neel and regional entries and entry fees are to be submitted to your regional program leader.

If you have a question regarding an entry, please contact Clyde Lane, Jim Neel or Emily Tipton. It is much easier to solve a problem now rather than at the show.

ENERGIZING TENNESSEE 4-H 2009-10

Crude Oil Prices. Biofuels. Wind Energy. Energy independence. Offshore drilling. ANWR. What can be more timely than to teach youth about the science of energy? Your county/center 4-H program has the opportunity to participate in the Energizing Tennessee 4-H grant program for 2009-10. This program is associated with the NEED kits featured at 4-H inservice in spring 2008.

A total of 24 counties participated in the Energizing Tennessee 4-H program in 2008-09. Statewide, over 25,000 youth contacts were made with over 4,500 Change-a-Light pledges acquired and 38 community events being conducted. 4-H professionals were also treated to an "Energy Tour" in April.

Many counties and 4-H centers have expressed an interest in this program. This will continue to be a large SET focus for this year and can fit easily into your Individual Action Agenda. This may also be a great way to make that big impact with your local school systems.

The program for 2009-10 is being planned at this time. Training sessions are being planned for late summer or early fall 2009. Be on the lookout for more information soon.

This program is being funded by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, Office of Energy Policy.
