2009 DAIRY SHOW ONLINE ENTRY PROGRAM IS NOW AVAILABLE

The online entry system will operated exactly like last year. All entries are required to be entered into the online system by 5:00 p.m. (EDT) on Monday, August 3. Keep in mind that it is still required for you to submit all 'hard copy' entry forms to Jeff Mitchell in the state Extension Animal Science office by August 1.

Before entering exhibitor or animal information, verify that data on the entry form is complete and animals meet eligibility guidelines. You will be responsible for entering all regional and state show entries from your county. Be sure to share this information with the agricultural teachers in your county!

You may access the online entry program from the Department of Animal Science home page (animalscience.ag.utk.edu) or by the direct URL below. Your username for the program is your University-wide email address (NetID@tennessee.edu) and your password is the unique UT personnel number. For example, Jeff Mitchell will log into the system with the username jmitchel@tennessee.edu.

LIFE SKILLS TARGETED AT 4-H TARGET SMART CAMP

The 2009 Tennessee 4-H Target Smart Camp was held at Ridley 4-H Center, June 29-July 2, with 64 campers in attendance. Campers explored their chosen shooting discipline through fun-filled, hands-on learning experiences. Other activities included a fun-filled afternoon with Marcella and B.D. Spence; a visit from Henry, the Amazing Canine; and a movie, popcorn and ice cream night. Many campers also managed to capture a pool side vantage point of the “Cardboard Regatta” as a special treat.

The Central Region boasted the largest delegation with 37 members attending. The Western Region had 22 campers; and the Eastern Region had 5. Maury County had the largest county delegation with 16 members. In addition to the campers, 8 senior 4-H members attended as camp assistants.

NOW ACCEPTING OPERATION: MILITARY KIDS COUNTY PROGRAM FUNDING PROPOSALS

County programming funds are now available for counties who are interested in conducting programs designed for military youth and families. The event should be held between now and August 31, 2009 and should cater primarily to military youth. Funds are limited to $500 per event/project.

Anderson County has already taken advantage of this great program by organizing 4-H Project Explosion Day. 28 youth participated in a variety of activities including outdoor cookery, t-shirt painting, woodworking, gardening and scrapbooking. 4-H agent Sarah Vaden is “excited to do a project that involves military children” and is “thankful for the funding.” This event will be the first experience many of these military youth will have with 4-H, and she is hopeful that this event got them excited about being involved with 4-H in the future.

County funding request for proposals were sent via e mail several weeks ago. For more information, or to request another copy of the proposal, please feel free to contact me.

ROUNDUP PRESS RELEASE FOR YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER

The 4-H Youth Development Department has created a press release for you to use in your local newspaper to highlight your county delegates’ trip to State 4-H Roundup. The press release is a general overview of the purpose of Roundup and the activities and events the delegates will participate in next week and can be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas09/attach/RoundupPressRelease.doc.

Please read the document carefully as blank spaces have been provided, such as county and delegate names, in order to personalize the press release to better reflect your county delegation's experiences. This is a Word document. Simply, delete the lines and type in the appropriate names.

Please note, if you have delegates that win in their respective projects, are elected to a State Council office or are initiated into Vol State, you are encouraged to expand the next to the last paragraph to announce those accomplishments.

UPDATED ENROLLMENT FORMS POSTED TO WEB SITE

The 2009-10 4-H enrollment form (F860) has been posted on the state 4-H Web site. The Explorer enrollment form for 4th graders (F861) is also posted on the site.

Just a reminder, judging is an activity related to project work. Youth enrolled in a judging team should also be enrolled in the related project. For clarification, outdoor meat cookery is an activity, not a judging team and is listed on the activity list. On the enrollment form, outdoor meat cookery is listed under judging teams to assist in identifying youth involved in the activity.

To locate the updated forms, go to 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/ and scroll down to “Enrollment.” If you have questions regarding 4-H enrollment, please contact me at 865-974-2128.
