Congratulations to the following county All Star groups and 4-H members who took top recognition during State 4-H Roundup and All Star Conference.

DON’T FORGET TO REGISTER YOUR DAIRY JUDGING TEAMS
Tuesday, August 18, is the deadline for registering your dairy judging team for the 2009 State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest. The event will be held at the Wilson County Fair in Lebanon on August 27. Entry forms must be mailed to Jeff Mitchell at jmitchel@tennessee.edu and may be found at http://animalscience.ag.utk.edu/Dairy/4-HDairyProject-Judging.html.
Competition will be held for senior teams ONLY. A policies and procedures manual may be accessed from the UT Dairy Extension site at http://animalscience.ag.utk.edu/Dairy/pdf/4-H/TN4-HDairyJudgingManual2004.pdf.
The schedule for the day is as follows:
8:30 a.m. - On site registration
9:00 a.m. - Contest begins
11:30 a.m. - Lunch
12:00 noon - Contestants begin reasons
12:30 p.m. - Oral reasons begin
2:30 p.m. - Awards ceremony
There is no registration fee, and lunch will be provided for all contestants. Pre-registration is required so there can be an accurate lunch count.

MCNAIRY COUNTY WILDLIFE TEAM RETURNS AS NATIONAL CHAMPION
The Tennessee state champion McNairy County 4-H wildlife judging team was named national champion at the 2009 4-H Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program (WHEP) held near Zwolle, Louisiana, July 19-23. Team members were Madison Mathenia, Chris Mullins, Tyler Ross and Nathan West. Tennessee was one of 16 states and 62 4-H’ers participated in this year’s contest.
The McNairy County 4-H’ers consistently ranked in the top ten individually in the separate portions of the contest. They dominated the wildlife management practices portion of the contest with Madison Mathenia placing first, Chris Mullins placing second and Tyler Ross placing third.
Madison Mathenia was recognized as being the second overall individual scorer of the contest while teammate Nathan West was third overall individual. Tyler Ross was fourth overall individual, and Chris Mullins was the seventh overall individual scorer in the national event.
The Tennessee team placed second in the written wildlife management plan portion of the contest and was named the eventual national champion. In addition to plaques for individual and team honors, each 4-H’er on the national championship team received $250 in prize money.
While in the Zwolle and Toledo Bend Lake areas, participants were treated to a Zwolle Tamale Fiesta and educational tours related to wildlife damage management, bird watching and white-tailed deer studies. Fun day activities included guided fishing trips, Shreveport Gun Club and a trip to Water Town USA. Coaches were taken on a tour of Natchitoches Parish which included a visit to the city of Natchitoches, the oldest city in the Louisiana Purchase and tours of Magnolia and Oakland Plantations which are part of the Cane River Creole National Historic Trail.
The McNairy County 4-H team would like to thank Dr. Craig Harper for all his effort to make sure our Tennessee wildlife teams are prepared for the national competition.

REGISTRATION DUE FOR 2009 SRTLC
The 4th annual Southern Region Teen Leadership Conference, scheduled for October 8-11, 2009 at the Clyde M. York 4-H Center in Crossville, promises to be a conference your 4-H members will never forget. This event, open to 4-H members ages 14-18, is an outstanding opportunity to help youth develop leadership skills and citizenship skills and help them find opportunities to put those skills to use in their community.
The registration fee for this conference is $175.00, which includes lodging, meals and a t-shirt. Please note that we are asking that counties send one or more county teams. These teams should include 3-5 youth plus one adult. However, we will accept individual teens from counties not able to send an entire team.
Registration for this event will be open in SUPER through Friday, August 28. After registering your 4-H member in SUPER, please send in the following materials to the state 4-H office.

A promotional flyer, overview packet and other promotional material can be accessed through the Web site at www.srtlc.com. Transportation to/from Crossville is the responsibility of the 4-H member. No organized transportation will be made available to 4-H members in Tennessee.

ROUNDUP GROUP PHOTO POSTED TO WEB SITE
A group photo was not sold at the 2009 State 4-H Roundup. Instead, it has been posted to the Tennessee 4-H Web site. The file can be downloaded from a link on the Roundup page at 4h.tennessee.edu/roundup/. This JPEG file is in a 8 X 12 format and should be of high enough quality to print at any photo developer.

ROUNDUP SERVICE PROJECT A HUGH SUCCESS
Delegates to the 86th Tennessee 4-H Roundup and All Star Conference helped improve the lives of West Tennessee families through their generosity and care. As part of the Roundup service project, Tennessee 4-H members collected just over 2,300 household items which provided 71 emergency care bags for families in need. These bags, which included items such as towels, shampoo and cleaning supplies, were donated to the Tennessee Army National Guard.

TENNESSEE COMPETES AT NATIONAL 4-H FORESTRY INVITATIONAL
Putnam County represented Tennessee in the 30th annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational from July 26-30. Team members Mitch Baker and Evan Betterton of Cookville, Mara McDonald of Baxter, and Ashley McGray of Monterey placed fifth among the 14 state teams participating in the event . The team was coached by Melissa Henry.
At the Invitational 4-H members compete for overall team and individual awards in several categories. Events included a forestry written exam, tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic map use, the forestry bowl and forest evaluation.
The invitational was held at West Virginia University Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston, West Virginia. The Farm Credit System and the Cooperative Extension Service sponsored the event.
Forrest Ford of Alabama received the high-point individual award. Second place high individual award was given to Amelia DeWitt of Alabama and third place high individual award was given to Amber Jenkins of Georgia.
The Joe Yeager leadership award was given to Wilson Pierce of Georgia. This award is presented to the individual who demonstrated excellent communication, management, decision-making and interpersonal skills at the Invitational.
This event is sponsored by the Farm Credit Systems (FCS), a government-sponsored enterprise created by Congress in 1916 to provide American agriculture with a dependable source of credit. The FCS is a nationwide network of cooperatively organized banks and associations that are owned and controlled by their borrowers. It serves all 50 States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The FCS provides credit and other services to agricultural producers and farmer-owned agricultural and aquatic cooperatives.
