4-H PROUD PARTNER RECOGNITION PROGRAM SET FOR NATIONAL 4-H WEEK
The Tennessee 4-H Foundation marketing committee has developed an activity by which county Extension 4-H programs may recognize local businesses during National 4-H Week, October 4-10. The agent resource page for the program is online at 4hfoundation.tennessee.edu/ProudPartner/ or go to the Foundation main page and click on “Resources for Agents.”
Businesses who have donated $100 or more to the county 4-H program can be recognized by being invited to display the “Proud Partner” logo as a decal on their business window, as well as posting the logo to their business Web site. Decal requests and Web site posting requests may be done online at the above address. Please complete these by September 30. A fill-in-the-blank news release is also downloadable from the site.
Let’s recognize those businesses that are so good to support 4-H!

ENERGIZING TENNESSEE 4-H REACHES 50 TENNESSEE COUNTIES
Congratulations to the 50 counties who will be receiving science kits, training and money to conduct “the science of energy” education to youth in their respective counties. The Energizing Tennessee 4-H program features science education kits that are created by NEED (National Energy Education Development). The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, Office of Energy, is providing training and funds for the NEED kits which are specifically designed for 4-H programs.
The NEED kits focus on energy and the science associated with it. These kits can be used in a variety of delivery methods. In addition, science and energy education is a very timely subject matter that can be used with virtually all demographics. This is an excellent way to incorporate SET objectives through the Workforce Prep State Action Agenda into many county 4-H programs.

NOMINATE VOLUNTEERS FOR THE 2010 SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE AWARD
The Salute to Excellence Award (STE) is a national program that aims to acknowledge those volunteers that are the backbone of 4-H programs. The award is sponsored by Monsanto through National 4-H Council, providing awards for volunteers in each region of the nation.
Each state can nominate one volunteer in each of two categories. The Volunteer of the Year Award is for individuals who have served as 4-H volunteers for less than 10 years at the county or state level. The Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer Award is for individuals who have served 10 or more years at the county or state level.
The applications are reviewed by an independent review panel. Two winners (one from each category) will be chosen from each of the four regions. Later, those eight winners will be reviewed again to choose the two national winners. The regional winners will all be acknowledged at their regional leader forums.
Tennessee has outstanding volunteers. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize them! The application guidelines and form can be downloaded from 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas09/attach/2010STEApp.doc.
Please read instructions carefully, especially item #3 of selection criteria. Nominations must be emailed to the state 4-H office with applications and letters of recommendation as attachments no later than 5:00 p.m. EDT on December 7, 2009. Send your nominations to Carmen Burgos at cburgos@utk.edu. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact me at 865-974-2128 or the email listed previously.

RECEIVE $400 FOR YOUR COUNTY 4-H PROGRAM
Thanks to generous support from John Deere, a $400 award will be presented to one county from each state (and one U.S. territory) with the highest number of individual Biofuel Blast results survey submissions between October 1 and October 30, 2009. The awards can be used toward the implementation and promotion of science, engineering and technology programs in your county. After youth complete the experiment, make sure that they go to www.4-H.org/NYSD to fill out the survey so your county can compete for the award!
In addition, of those who submit their results through the Biofuel Blast experiment survey, five youth names will be randomly selected to receive a 32GB third generation iPod touch. The five youth will also be able to designate a 4-H club, school classroom or youth organization to receive one of the Fuel Cell Car Experiment kits. Go to www.4-h.org/NYSD/results_rules.php for official drawing rules.
Just a reminder to email 4-HNYSD@4-H.org and copy dsarver@tennessee.edu, with details about your upcoming 4-H NYSD events. Please include event dates, locations and contact information to be added to the map of 4-H National Youth Science Day events!
4-H National Youth Science Day is only three weeks away - pass the word!
