MARK GATELEY TO LEAVE UT EXTENSION

Mark Gateley, Extension Specialist, 4-H Youth Development, has indicated his plans to leave UT Extension. Mark began his Extension career in 1992 as an agent in Anderson County with 4-H youth responsibilities. For the past 14 years, he has provided leadership for the Tennessee 4-H Foundation, Inc. as its Executive Director. During Mark’s tenure, the Foundation’s assets have increased from $1.1 million in 1996 to their present value of $5.9 million. Much of this growth can be attributed to Mark’s focus in establishing new endowments which permanently fund 4-H programs. Mark has worked closely with county directors in establishing one or more endowments in 92 counties. Please join us in wishing Mark a rewarding future. Plans to celebrate his accomplishments will be announced at a later date.

NEW GOAT JUDGING RESOURCE AVAILABLE

Do you struggle with helping youth evaluate goats? Do you wish there was a ready-made training resource that went through goat evaluation step by step? Your wish has come true thanks to Ricky Skillington, Marshall County Extension director! Skillington has developed a great resource to help coaches train youth and adults on goat selection. The PowerPoint and script are available on the Tennessee 4-H Web site under Additional Resources on the goat project page at 4h.tennessee.edu/projects/goat.htm. This resource is easy to use and can be used by agents, volunteer leaders and teen leaders. Special thanks go to David Gordon, the Mitchell Moat family and the Tennessee Livestock Producers for their assistance in making this resource possible.

SODEXO FOUNDATION STOP HUNGER SCHOLARSHIPS

The Sodexo Foundation seeks applicants for the STOP Hunger Scholarships to recognize students (K-grad school) in the fight against hunger in America. Fifty-million people are at risk of hunger, including 17 million children. The Sodexo Foundation works to ensure that every child in the U.S., especially those most at risk, grows up with dependable access to enough nutritious food to enable them to lead a healthy, productive life. The STOP Hunger Scholarships recognize and reward students who have made a significant impact in the fight against hunger in the United States.

Selected students receive a $5,000 scholarship and a matching $5,000 grant for their hunger-related charity. The application deadline is February 18, 2011. Learn more and apply at www.SodexoFoundation.org. You can also join on Facebook at www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=43208057211.

STATE MARKET HOG SHOW RESULTS

The 2011 State Market Hog was held at the Tennessee Livestock Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. A total of 169 youth from 29 counties exhibited 348 market hogs. In addition to showing individual and pen-of-three market hogs, there were competitions in showmanship, skillathon and premier exhibitor.

The market hog show was held in conjunction with the Tennessee Pork Producers Association annual meeting. Market hog exhibitors were treated to a pizza and pool party and a barbecue lunch. The judges for the show were Jake Bachman and Luke McDonnell. Jake judged showmanship and the pen-of-three show. Jake resides in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and is employed by Agrium US. Luke, from New Castle, Indiana, heads up the Indiana Junior Swine Circuit. He judged showmanship and the individual market hogs.

Tennessee Farm Bureau Insurance sponsored the $1,000 Senior Level II and the $500 Senior Level 1 Premier Exhibitor scholarships. UT Livestock Association presented the exhibitors of the grand champion and reserve grand champion trophy award belt buckles. Other sponsors of the 2011 4-H Market Hog Show include Tennessee Farmers Cooperative, Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Tennessee Pork Producers Association, Jonathan Pierce, Glenn Conatser, Lincoln County Livestock Association, Carr Brothers, Odom’s Tennessee Pride Sausage, Goolsby Sausage, Farm Credit Services, Kelly Prater, University of Tennessee Department of Animal Science and UT Extension.

TENNESSEE 4-H CONGRESS SERVICE PROJECT REMINDER

As you are promoting Tennessee 4-H Congress, please remember to share the information about the two service projects planned for this year. The theme for the Congress service project is "Our Hands to a Larger Service." Delegates are asked to collect healthy food items for the Second Harvest Food Bank’s backpack program. Second Harvest distributes healthy food items to 42 different schools and afterschool programs across Middle Tennessee through its backpack program. The backpacks are sent home with youth every Friday to ensure they have healthy food items to eat over the weekend. Items needed include 100% fruit juice boxes, granola bars and peanut butter and cracker packs.

Please help us kick off the next 100 years of Tennessee 4-H by seeing just how many food items your county can bring to Congress! A flier can be downloaded at 4h.tennessee.edu/stcong/generalinfo/largerservice11.pdf. For more information on the Second Harvest Food Bank backpack program, please visit www.secondharvestmidtn.org/programs/backpack.php.
