David Barlow of Carter County is the state winner in the Electric project. David is a senior at Family Christian Academy and the son of Robert and Roslyn Barlow of Johnson City. David learned about his project by watching his dad, an electronics engineer, disassemble, reassemble and recreate various circuits at home. He has held leadership positions as vice president of the county 4-H Honor Club, Eastern Region All Star area scout and a teen leader at junior 4-H camp. He was a member of the state-winning forestry judging team that represented Tennessee at the National 4-H Forestry Invitational. David says his 4-H All Star involvement pushed him "out of his comfort zone" and helped him become more outgoing. He also serves a teen leader for his church's youth group and is the Sunday school teacher for the senior high youth group. David plans to attend East Tennessee State University.

Jillian Barnes

Jillian Barnes of Henry County made curtains for the Buford Ellington 4-H Center in Milan as part of her winning Citizenship project. Jillian is the daughter of Karen Bierly and Darryl Barnes and a senior at Henry County High School. Her curtain-making project required 1,200 yards of fabric to make 551 curtains. She involved other in her community by soliciting donations and assistance from FCE clubs in the county as well as teaching a group of younger 4-H'ers so they could help with the sewing. Jillian was the 2006 Level I state winner in the clothing and textiles project and represented Tennessee in the chicken barbecue contest at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. She serves on the planning committee for the 2007 Southern Region Teen Leadership Conference. She is president of the Henry County 4-H Honor Club, Western Region 4-H All Star area representative and a teen leader at 4-H camp. She enjoys singing and dancing as a member of the Tennessee 4-H Performing Arts Troupe.


Brittany Basham of Warren County is attending National 4-H Congress as a state winner in the Consumer Education/Economics project. Her parents are Rodney and Tena Basham of Centertown. Through her project, Brittany has worked with children at the Warren County Day Care, learned how to balance a savings and checking account and made a collection of foreign currency. She has earned awards for demonstrations and speeches and is a Vol State recipient. She has participated in the personal development, horticulture/garden and plant science projects. Brittany has served as a teen leader at 4-H camp, made fruit bags for the elderly, taught at county day camps and lead a kindergarten candy project. Brittany is a freshman at Motlow Community College majoring in elementary education.


Erika Betschart

Erika Betschart of Warren County received a silver bowl for her outstanding work in the Food Science project. This high school senior is the daughter of Tina Lassiter and Michael Betschart of McMinnville. Erika has lead workshops on healthy food choices and has taught more than 300 children the difference between the old and new food pyramids. She has been a member of her county's consumer decision-making and meats judging teams. Erika credits her leadership experiences in 4-H as having helped her become more responsible. She has served as June Dairy Month chairman and vice president of the county fair board. This three-time state leadership finalist was also a Tennessee delegate to the 2007 National Institute on Cooperative Education Youth Conference (NICE). Erika plans to attend the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and study agriculture.


Sarah Boggess

Sarah Boggess of Campbell County is representing Tennessee as a state winner in the Horticulture/Garden project. Sarah is the daughter of Toney and Dorri Boggess of Lafollette. Sarah's project focused on accessible gardening. She experimented with different types of gardening to see what worked best. This 2004 Level I state garden winner has earned numerous ribbons for her horticulture exhibits at the Tennessee Valley Fair. Sarah is recognized for her leadership ability and has served as a representative-at-large on the State 4-H Council, Eastern Region 4-H All Star deputy chief and scout, as well as numerous offices for her county 4-H club and FFA chapter. Sarah is attending the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and majoring in plant sciences.


Joanna Buxkemper

Joanna Buxkemper of Loudon County is Tennessee's state winner in the Veterinary Science project. This high school senior is the daughter of Steve and Sharon Buxkemper of Lenoir City. Joanna's work in the veterinary science project centered around her flock of 50 Montadale sheep and her family's horses, pigs and dogs. She shared her skills with younger 4-H'ers in her county by serving as a teen leader for sheep and horse project groups. Joanna was a member of the state-winning meat judging team and earned a trip to the National 4-H Meat Judging and Identification competition in Kansas City. Joanna says, "4-H has helped me to be confident in myself and to interact successfully with other people in many situations." She has held 4-H offices at the local, county and regional levels and is the president of her school's Mu Alpha Theta chapter. Joanna plans to pursue a degree in veterinary science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
