A. DAIRY POSTER CONTEST
DONOR: American Dairy Association of Tennessee
  1. RULES AND PROCEDURES:
    a. Members will make a promotional poster about milk and/or milk products using the theme designated by the sponsoring organization.
    b. Posters must be 14 x 22 inches. Posters must be horizontal.
    c. There will be only one category for posters (4-H and 4-H SPIFFY combined) with one winner selected per county.
    d. The county 4-H and SPIFFY agents will be responsible for determining the county winner and submitting the poster for state judging.
    e. The county winning poster must be received by J.J. Collins, SUDIA, 3560 Ottway Road, Greeneville, TN 37745 by the deadline date.
    f. Member's name, address, agent's name, phone number and the number of posters entered in the local and county contests must be on a 3" X 5" card attached to the back of the poster.
    g. Judges will be selected by ADA of Tennessee and all posters will become the property of ADA of Tennessee. Posters will not be returned to individuals.
  2. AWARDS: (State winners will be announced at the June Dairy Month kick-off luncheon in Nashville.)
    a. County Winner: T-shirt
    b. State Winners: First - $500 U.S. savings bond; second - $250 U.S. savings bond; and third - $125 U.S. savings bond
    c. County office with first place winner - $100 cash

B. DAIRY QUIZ BOWL
DONOR: Dairy Farmers of America, Inc.
  1. RULES AND PROCEDURES:
    a. Senior Division - Each county may enter up to two teams. All 4-H members who are in the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades on January 1 of the current year are eligible to participate. (Team members must have reached their 15th birthday during the current contest year.)  A team must be composed of four members.
    b. Junior High Division - Each county may enter up to two teams. All 4-H members in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades as of January 1 of the current year are eligible to participate. Teams may be composed of either three or four members.
    c. Team members should be prepared to answer both oral and written questions.
    d. References for all questions will be the 4-H dairy project manuals and the Hoard's Dairyman magazine.
  2. AWARDS: Plaque to first place team and a partial scholarship to the 4-H Dairy Invitational Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Kentucky.

C. F.A.C.E. (Food and Cover Establishment for Wildlife)
DONOR: Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency
  1. RULES AND REGULATIONS:
    a. Contestants must plant seed mixture furnished free by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. (These seed have been inspected by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.)
    b. Only one 5 lb. bag of seed may be used per plot. No extra seed may be added.
    c. Contestants may plant more than one plot, but only one may be entered in the contest.
    d. 4-H members of all ages are eligible.
    e. 4-H members must be enrolled in the wildlife project to enter.
    f. Plot will be disqualified if damaged by livestock.
    g. Complete records must be kept and turned in before competing in the contest. The record form to be used is included in the leaflet SP209.
  2. AWARDS: Plots will be judged on the county level only. Each county winner will receive the following.
    a. A gift valued at $50
    b. A certificate
    c. One-year subscription to TWRA Wildlife magazine

D. JUNE DAIRY MONTH PROMOTION
DONOR: American Dairy Association of Tennessee
  1. ELIGIBILITY:
    a. One 4-H member from each county may represent the county in competition.
    b. Tennessee's 95 counties are divided into three groups according to the number of radio stations and newspapers in the county. These three groups form the three divisions of competition in each region. Counties will only be competing with the other counties within the group except for the special award for creativity.
  2. RECORDS REQUIRED: A report (in scrapbook form) on all June Dairy Month promotion activities must be submitted to American Dairy Association of Tennessee by the date specified in the ADA announcement of the activity.
  3. SCORE CARD:
    a. Use of radio - 20%
    b. Use of newspaper - 10%
    c. Promotion projects - 70%
  4. AWARDS: Participation awards will be made to all county representatives. Plaques and appropriate merchandise awards will be made to regional and state winners in each division.

E. OUTDOOR MEAT COOKERY
DONORS: Tennessee Department of Agriculture; Tennessee Beef Industry Council; Tennessee Egg and Poultry Association; and Tennessee Sheep Producers Association
  1. RULES AND PROCEDURES:
    a. Each county may enter three junior high and three senior teams on the regional level.
    b. Members who enter the junior high division must be in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade on January 1 of the current year.
    c. Members who enter the senior division must be in the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade on January 1 of the current year.
    d. A team will consist of four members. A team must have an individual in each of the four divisions of the contest. The four divisions will be beef, pork, lamb and poultry.
    e. Counties may enter one, two or three individuals when it is not possible to enter a team with four members. These individuals would be eligible for individual recognition on the regional level and could serve as alternates in the event that a substitution would need to be made for the state contest. Individual specie winners in a regional contest not on a state qualifying team will advance to state competition and are eligible for individual awards on the state level.
    f. Each region will send three senior teams to the state contest.
    g. The contestants will be scored by judges according to the 4-H Outdoor Meat Cookery score sheet.
    h. Each contestant will provide two (2) fresh, uncooked meat items, one for the team platter and the other for sampling. The retail cut is the participant's choice. However, the cut must be prepared within the time limit. The poultry item may be either chicken or turkey. The cut can be marinated prior to the contest. Contestants should be prepared to state a degree of doneness (rare, medium rare, medium, medium well or well done) for the beef, lamb and pork cuts.
    i. Preparation and cooking time limit is two (2) hours. The contestants are required to turn in the prepared meat at the end of the state cooking time.
    j. The contestant should provide a copy of any recipes used to the judges. Sauces and marinades may be commercial or personal recipe.
    k. Barbecue grills, charcoal starters, grilling supplies and table set-ups must be provided by the contestants. Grills with or without hoods may be used. Also, aluminum foil may be used to construct a windscreen or hood.
    l. Contestants will work alone, except for setting up the cooking area and preparing the meat platter for presentation. In case of an emergency as determined by contest monitors, team members may be allowed to share cooking space.
    m. Members of the state winning team shall be ineligible to participate in the contest again.
  2. AWARDS:
    a. Region:
      (1) Junior High - $50 U.S. savings bond to each member of the winning team.
      (2) Senior - Trips to the state outdoor meat cookery contest for three teams.
    b. State:
      (1) Plaques and $100 U.S. savings bond to each member of the champion senior team.
      (2) Plaques to the high individuals in each of the four divisions of the contest.
      (3) First place poultry contestant - Trip to National 4-H Chicken Barbecue Contest.
      (4) Second place poultry contestant - Trip to National 4-H Turkey Barbecue Contest.

F. PHOTO SEARCH
  1. Any junior high or senior 4-H member may submit entries. Photos must be taken by the member making the entry.
  2. Each entry will consist of a print (no larger than 5 X 7) and the negative, a color slide or a diskette containing the photo in a digital format. Prints need not be provided for a color slide or digital photo.
  3. A completed entry form must accompany each Photo Search entry.
  4. Photos should relate to 4-H involvement. An entry may be a single photo or a series of not more than four photos. A series may be a "before and after" scene or a "how to" sequence.
  5. Entries will be judged on quality and message. The photos might depict: 4-H project work; 4-H exhibits, shows, fairs, etc.; 4-H leadership or citizenship; leisure education, camp, etc.; human interest or other.
  6. Each county may select up to ten entries to submit for state judging.
  7. All county-winning photographs must be in the state 4-H office by June 15 of the current year, so there is adequate time for judging and printing of the winning entries before Roundup.
  9. Ten entries will be displayed at State 4-H Roundup. 8" X 10" prints of these will be made.
  10. Entry forms for entries will be furnished to 4-H members. This form contains an optional clause that would give UT Extension the right to use pictures in publications, publicity, etc.

G. TARGET SMART
DONORS: Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency; Federal Cartridge Corporation; and Friends of the Tennessee 4-H Foundation, Inc.
  1. OBJECTIVES:
    a. To increase awareness of safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment through hands on instruction.
    b. To improve marksmanship.
    c. To provide leadership opportunities for participants and adult volunteer leaders.
    d. To help participants and leaders learn new skills, heritage appreciation and recreational activities.
    e. o develop skills and attitudes to enhance the 4-H program in participating counties.
  2. PARTICIPATION:
    a. Leadership Requirements: The Extension agent responsible for the county program must complete the prescribed training course. Leaders responsible for conducting the 4-H activities must also complete this course and be certified as a hunter education instructor by Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency in addition to any other instructor ratings.
    b. Youth Enrollment Requirements: The youth must enroll in the 4-H engineering/safety science project in a participating county. The youth must show evidence of successful completion of the Tennessee Hunter Education Course or that of another state.
  3. CURRICULUM TOPICS: Shotgun, muzzle loading, archery, rifle/bb, wildlife and hunter ethics.
