| A RESOLUTION |
to proclaim and recognize that Tennessee 4-H Congress is supporting a renewed emphasis in the areas of science, engineering and technology (SET) programming. |
WHEREAS the National Science Foundation concluded that most Tennessee 4th, 8th and 12th graders did not demonstrate grade level proficiency in science and mathematics; and
WHEREAS Tennessee ranked in the 4th quartile in the percentage of science and engineering degrees conferred as a share of total higher education degrees; and
WHEREAS employment in science and engineering occupations will increase about 70% faster than the overall growth rates for all occupations nationally through 2012; and
WHEREAS 4-H began as a way to bring innovations in science, engineering and technology from USDA and the land-grant universities to the citizens through teaching young people; and,
WHEREAS Tennessee 4-H has been and is now, more than ever, poised to lead the way in providing opportunities for youth to engage in a process of discovery and exploration in science, engineering and technology so they are prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century,
THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED that the 4-H Senators and Representatives of this 61st Tennessee 4-H Congress do hereby proclaim and affirm their commitment to renewed 4-H programming efforts in the areas of science, engineering and technology (SET) in the state of Tennessee.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of Joint Resolution No. 0002 be forwarded to Governor Phil Bredesen and the state district attorneys.
