4-H NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE DAY, OCTOBER 7
On 4-H National Youth Science Day, October 7, young people across the nation will get a chance to examine one of the most important issues facing our nation today - energy. Youth will discover, learn and have a blast exploring alternative fuels through Biofuel Blast, the National Science Experiment.
Developed in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension and Wisconsin 4-H, the experiment is designed to spark an early interest in the sciences - all part of 4-H's initiative to engage young people in science, engineering and technology programs.
You can find everything you need to participate in 4-H National Youth Science Day online at www.4-H.org/NYSD. The site has lots of useful information, including the experiment facilitator's guide, interactive tools, event planning kits and much more. Plus, new features, information and promotions will be added in the months and weeks leading up to October 7 so make sure to register to receive event updates today.
We're looking forward to another successful 4-H National Youth Science Day!

DICKSON COUNTY COMPETES AT INTERNATIONAL BB GUN CHAMPIONSHIP
On Friday, July 3, 2009, 42 teams of the nation’s best BB gun marksmen gathered at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green to decide who would take home the national title. Dickson County was represented by 10 4-H’ers at the International BB Gun Championship Match. Ray Hobbs, President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Daisy Outdoor Products was on hand to welcome the teams and coaches. A $1,000 gift card was presented by Mr. Hobbs to each team qualifying for and arriving to compete in Bowling Green. “This is Daisy’s way of encouraging folks in every community across the nation to start a formal BB gun program for their young folks,” added Hobbs.
Members of the team were recognized for their improved scores from the state qualifying contest. Dickson County team members received the Eddie Harper Memorial Trophy, which is given in recognition of the team with the most improved score from their state qualifying contest.
Representing Dickson County on the A team were Samantha Smith with a combined score of 417, Beau Badon with a score of 428, Branden McDaniel with a score of 429, David Johnson who scored 385 and Andrew Tidwell with a score of 363. The entire team score was 2022 with an improved score from the state qualifying match of 136 points.
The B team consisted of Luke Rinehart with a score of 354, Ryan McDaniel scored a 405, Morgan Smith with a score of 400, Trace Pierce scored a 405 and Dylan Dunnagan scored a 376. The team had a combined score of 1940 which was a 237 point improvement over their state qualifying score.
4-H agent Jim Akins said, “I am very proud of all that these 4-H’ers, coaches and parents have accomplished. We have some shooters on the team that had never held a rifle three months ago and they have now put in the practice and hard work to be able to compete at the national level. I think that really says something about the quality of the youth in Dickson County and the parents and volunteers who work with them.”

IT’S CWF TIME IN TENNESSEE!
Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a national trip dedicated to educating young people about how they relate to our federal government. It takes place in the greatest place to learn about government... Washington, D.C. 4-H members get the opportunity to discuss and debate issues that are relative to young people. They also get an in-depth look at how bills are formed and passed into law. They will also have an opportunity to visit with their national lawmakers.
Don't forget about the sights! The Capitol, the White House, all the memorials including the new World War II Memorial, the National Cathedral, the Smithsonians and much, much more.
It is a cultural experience as well. The delegation visits the "theatre" each year. And of course, the social aspects of this event are awesome. Our 4-H members will get the opportunity to meet other young people from all across the country.
If you have 4-H members who might benefit from this experience please promote this activity to them. An agent letter can be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas09/attach/CWFletter09.pdf with all pertinent information as well as a registration form at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas09/attach/CWFreg09.pdf.
If you need additional information please let me know. You can download a promotional brochure from the Eastern Region Web site at uteasternregion.org/4h/Citizenship%20Washington%20Focus%20(CWF).htm. (Make sure when printing the brochure you change to landscape in printing properties.) I also have a Powerpoint with highlights from previous years that is a great promotional tool. I would also be willing to promote this opportunity at an Honor Club or All Star meeting. There are some great scenes posted on the Web site from previous years.
I will have an exhibit promoting CWF at Roundup. If you have 4-H'ers who are interested in the trip have them stop by and see me. Also, if you have any further questions. feel free to call or email.

POSTCARDS FOR PAUL KELLY
As many of you know Paul Kelly, 4-H agent in Lawrence County, is currently serving in Iraq. Something that I have done as a Soldiers’ Angel is postcard books for soldiers. This consists of postcards sent from each state arranged in a decorated scrapbook.
I would like to do this for Paul using the counties in our Tennessee. I would like to collect a postcard from each county (one with something specific from your county/city would be great!), from 4-H’ers, volunteers, fellow agents and whoever is willing to send a postcard with a positive, supportive message. (I will admit… I would particularly love to have postcards from 4-H’ers… although others are very welcome as well.)
The postcard book will be assembled and shipped to him overseas. Please send cards to Paul Kelly, P.O. Box 100, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464. This would be a great service project for a county Honor Club or All Star group!

ROCK EAGLE LEADER FORUM DEADLINE IS FAST APPROACHING
The deadline to register for the Southern Region Volunteer Leader Forum is August 12, and I
certainly would not anyone missing this extraordinary opportunity to learn and share with
volunteers and Extension staff from across the Southern Region.
Just a few reminders...
Date: October 1 - 4, 2009
Host State: Alabama
Theme: “4-H Volunteers... A Southern Tradition”
Registration Fee: $240.00 (lodging, meals and T-shirt/transportation is on your own)
Registration Deadline: August 12 (After August 20, there will be a $50.00 late fee!)
Participation in the forum is a great experience for volunteers and agents. It offers the
opportunity to network with other states, exchange creative ideas and make new friends. It is
an educational, motivational and cultural experience. Some of the special events include one of
the South’s greatest traditions - FOOTBALL with a Southern Region tailgate party, “Clovers
Unlimited,” Saturday night’s meal with the feel of a Ducks Unlimited-type dinner
with great country cookin’, an auction, a raptor display and other natural resource activities.
Speakers and entertainment include: Jeanne Robertson, professional speaker, humorist and
author; The American Belles, known for their patriotic flair and harmonic vocal blend; and the
Deepstep - Georgia’s 2008 Country Band of the Year.
Registration will be through SUPER. A registration form is provided on the Web site for
volunteers and agents to complete. However, forms are to be returned to the county office so
delegates may be properly registered through SUPER. Agents will then forward their
registration fees with a list of volunteer names to the state 4-H office. The state 4-H office cannot
register volunteers in SUPER for this event. It can only be done through the county office.
Following registration instructions will avoid delays in the process.
Alabama has created a great informational booklet full of information .To access this
publication and the registration form go to 4h.tennessee.edu/volunteers/rockeagle/.
If you have questions or concerns regarding the information in the packet, please contact
