4-H Shooting Sports Program

To join a 4-H Shooting Sports Program, contact your County Extension Office. The Tennessee 4-H Shooting Sports Program is a volunteer-led program that teaches life skills through shooting sports. Youth learn safety and shooting techniques in the disciplines of shotgun, rifle, archery, muzzleloader and hunting. This program is affiliated with National 4-H Shooting Sports. Contact your County Extension Office for more information on joining 4-H. Volunteer Instructors Be a Certified 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor. "4-H Certified" means that you are versed in the areas of youth development AND shooting sports. If you want to lead a group of young people in the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, you must become certified through a Tennessee 4-H Shooting Sports Training Event. Click here to see a job description. Check back here for information on the next Instructor Certification. Participants must receive approval from their County Extension Office prior to registering. All registration forms and fees must be sent to your County Extension Office.
The Tennessee 4-H State Shoot is tentatively scheduled for April, 2010. Tentatively scheduled disciplines offered will be Air Rifle, Archery, BB, and Shotgun. More details to come. The Tennessee 4-H State Air Rifle, Archery, and BB Shoot was held on April 25, 2009 at Ridley 4-H Center in Columbia, TN. Click here for a list of the winners. The top 2 teams in BB, both from Dickson County, participated in the 2009 International BB Gun Championship Match, held at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green on July 3-5, 2009. Shelby County 4-H won the right to represent Tennessee at the National 4-H Invitational, held on June 24-28, 2009, in Grand Island, Nebraska. See a photo of the delegation. Click here to read about it in Tennessee 4-H Ideas, the online weekly newsletter! 4-H Target Smart Camp is a program of Tennessee 4-H Shooting Sports. It is for youth who are enrolled in grades 5-12 on January 1 of the current calendar year. This resident camp is located at the W.P. Ridley 4-H Center in Columbia, Tennessee. At camp youth learn appropriate skills to succeed in a variety of shooting sports and related areas such as archery, riflery, shotgun use, muzzleloading, and outdoor skills. Programs emphasize safety, correct form, and responsible use. Campers should receive prior training before attending this camp.
To sign up for camps, contact your local county Extension office. Participants in 4-H Shooting Sports should be keeping records of their participation. Completing a portfolio is the way to do this. Click here for forms and instructions. In addition, you may also use archery, rifle, muzzleloader, and shotgun scoresheets to monitor your progress.
