Environmental health comprises the aspects of human health, including quality of life, that are determined by interaction with physical, chemical, biological and social factors in the environment.
For the majority of Americans, the purchase of a home is the single greatest investment of a lifetime. Housing encompasses many areas of concern for homeowners, renters and those whose dream is to own a home. These issues include finding and affording a home, maintaining the home and the health and safety of those living in the home. Extension is committed through education to assist people in making good, sound decisions on selecting the best housing option for them, maintaining the home both financially and structurally, and making sure the home is a safe and healthy place to live and raise a family.
The University of Tennessee Extension is committed to the health and health care of Tennesseans by providing health information and programs through the 95 county Extension offices. The Extension health programs are community-based and provide research-based education that results in self-responsibility for health. The focus of these programs is on the role of Tennesseans and their families in the management of their health and health care.
Everyone wants to live, work and play in a safe environment. Unfortunately, people are often at risk because they are unaware of potential dangers and do not take proper precautions. There are over 20 million medical visits annually due to unintentional injuries in homes alone. Safety encompasses environments, products and behaviors. Extension is committed to educating individuals, families and others on safety issues and encouraging people to implement safe practices.
