Personal Finance for Teachers

The Need NEFE HSFPP Curriculum Cover

Did you know that 66% of high school students think using a check cashing service is good and 31% of them owe money to a person or company? (HSFPP Launch Training, March 2007) In the National Jump$tart Financial Literacy Survey, March 2008, Tennessee high school students scored only 44.8%. Hopefully, these statistics will improve. Beginning in 2013 graduating seniors must have completed a one-half credit course in Personal Finance.

The Solution

UT Extension is an approved provider by the Department of Education of the required certification in this new subject matter. Extension educators are offering 2 day workshops across the state which will provide the 14 hours of certification required by teachers to teach personal finance. Thanks to the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) and its High School Financial Planning Program® (HSFPP), we are able to provide this training for teachers along with free curriculum for both teachers and students.

The HSFPP curriculum uses unique games, simulations, case studies and interactive exercises to teach young people to manage their money wisely. The curriculum includes the following units, each with class outlines, evaluations, lesson plans, and PowerPoint lessons:

  • Financial Planning: Your Roadmap
  • Career: Labor You Love
  • Budget: Don't Go Broke
  • Savings and Investments: Your Money at Work
  • Credit: Buy Now, Pay Later
  • Insurance: Your Protection

The units correspond to new state personal finance education standards. Designed to be taught in 16 classroom hours, the lessons can be adjusted to fit your classroom needs. The programs main objectives are:

  1. to educate high school students about sound money management skills and the financial planning process, and
  2. to help teens begin to develop positive behaviors that are necessary to attaining financial maturity and achieving a secure future.

Workshops are provided at no charge. Space will be filled on a first come basis. Participation is open to all Tennessee high school educators.
